Many audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts argue that DTS surround sound formats can deliver higher quality audio in comparison to their corresponding Dolby formats, with improved dynamic range, better representation of subtle detail in audio content, and improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Partly, this reasoning arises because DTS surround sound is usually encoded at a higher data rate than Dolby Digital and its lineup of associated formats.

This is more than understandable. We are dealing with lossy compression techniques. A higher bit-rate for the same format should normally implies superior sound during playback, as less compression in the encoding process should result in a better representation of the original sound source.

In this Dolby vs DTS debate, DTS people argue that they are after 'sonic perfection, not space consumption' - hence the higher bit rate and lower compression.

Dolby would counteract that their codec is more efficient and therefore, it can run at a lower bit rate.

In other words, one cannot simply draw conclusion on sound quality based on raw bit rates and compression figures alone; it also depends on how well designed are the encoding and decoding algorithms. And this makes sense too, but then...

There are relatively big differences in raw bit rates and compression levels when comparing Dolby vs DTS sound formats, implying a too wide a difference in codec efficiency - about 3 times as much - in favor of Dolby. Is it possible that Dolby sound formats achieve this level of codec efficiency?

The truth is that when dealing with different sound formats, the whole equation starts to get extremely complicated; it is not that easy to define what makes better sound.

To understand why this Dolby vs DTS surround sound controversy, it is necessary to have an understanding of the main differences between these formats. Thus, while it is objectively possible to compare the resultant sound quality for the same audio format encoded at different bit rates, say in a movie house application and in home entertainment, yet it is not so straightforward when dealing with different formats.

Rather, for identically sourced audio content, it would be much easier for the listener during Dolby vs DTS 'blind' listening tests to notice a change in sound quality when changing the playback equipment between different brands, than when changing from Dolby to DTS. In other words, you need a thoroughly refined audio playback setup to bring out that subtle difference in sound quality between these two formats.

Emmerdale Farm - Visit the Emmerdale Farm Locations

Visiting the filming locations of the popular ITV night time soap opera Emmerdale is still quite an easy task.

When the filming of Emmerdale first began in the 1970s, the small Yorkshire town of Arndale in Littondale was used for the very early title sequences of the show. The show was originally conceived as being a daytime soap opera, this was soon moved to it's early evening time slot, a place it still holds today after more than 20 years.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the outdoor shots were then filmed in the town of Esholt also in West Yorkshire. Esholt was used for a very long time for shooting scenes, this in return made the town very popular with tourists, later causing a problem because with so many visitors were coming to visit Esholt, the local council were receiving complaints from residents that their town was becoming over run. After discussions and plans being submitted for extra car parks and facilities, it was decided by the council that this was not a good plan.

The early 1990s saw the whole format of Emmerdale Farm change, Farm was dropped from the title and an exclusive purpose built outdoor set was built on the outskirts of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, on the estate of Harewood House. Fans today still visit the areas of Arndale and Esholt as this is the original home of the still popular ITV show. Disks such as CD, DVD, HD DVD, blu-ray, flash drives, and external hard drives are convenient means of data storage. They are characterized by small size and light weight, which allows them to be easily carried and transported.

External hard drives

External hard drives are storage devices based on the hard drive technology which are not a part of computer hardware, but can be connected to a PC via any of the available interfaces such as USB, SATA, FireWire or SCSI.

To get on this pipe act as if you were going to exit the room. You will then see in the middle of the room a rectangular board looking thing. Jump on top of this and then jump on a small pipe. You will then be able to jump on the pipe containing the skull. Once you get on the pipe the skull is yours. Just go down towards the end of the big pipe.

TOUGH LUCK- The skull is on the level Tsavo Highway. It is extremely hard to tell the exact location, so please look to the bottom at the links.

CATCH- The catch skull is quite hard to get. It involves grenade jumping. On the level the storm, when you have to kill the anti air wraiths DON'T!!!!!!!!! IF you do you will make the skull go away. Well in the field the anti air wraith is there is a pillar. the skull is on top of the pillar. Video is at the bottom of the page.

FOG- The FOG skull is on the level the FLOODGATE. In the beginning right before you enter the city you will hear a marine shout "what is that?" Then you must shoot the flood that has the skull as it jumps across the roof.

FAMINE- Is on the level ark and the level ark is just to big to give a detailed location so please look to the bottom.It is helpful to have a vehicle.

THUNDERSTORM- On the level covenant when you are in a hornet. Go to the second reactor and on the thing that going over the reactor is where the skull is. Again if a bit confused look at the videos to the right.

MYTHIC- Is on the last level at the beginning. When you turn into the first cave follow it until you see another cave to the right, follow that until you see the skull.

TILT-Is on the cortana level. In the room where she mentions she like to play games there is something that looks like a mushroom. Jump on the mushroom then jump up on the thing that is connected to the mushroom. Next jump to another mushroom looking thing and the skull will be near there.

GRUNT BIRTHDAY PARTY- On the level crowsnest. In the room where there are pipes and drones come out there is a drop at the end. DON'T drop down. Instead there is a ledge, slowly go over the edge and drop on the ledge. The skull will be there. This is the funnest skull to use in Halo 3.

BLIND- It is on the level Sierra 117. It is close to the beginning. It is where you have your first real battle and there is a water fall. Go to the right of the waterfall and the blind skull will be on a rocky cliff.

COWBELL-It is on the level the ARK. When you fight the scarab there is a little house looking thing in the middle of the desert near the scarab. In it there is some gravity lift. Get one, after you beat the scarab continue the level. Then when you get into the building your suppose too you will find a room. In the room there will be things that look like bee hive holes. Use a gravity lift to boost yourself up. Please look at the video if you don't understand.

IWHBYD-This is probably the most difficult skull to find and get. It is on the level the covenant. Where you kill the the prophet there should be rings. DON'T jump through any because it will cause it to mess up. First you must make sure everything is dead such as the flood. Afterward, the rings are numbered. 1 is the beginning ring and 7 is the end. Now, once everything is dead, jump through the rings in this order "4,6,5,4,5,3" After you do this all the rings should start to blink. If this happens the skull has appeared near where you killed the prophet. There are a few ring combinations to get this skull so if the one i listed above doesn't work out look at the video. This is the hardest skull to get in Halo 3.

Paramount and Warner Support Blu-ray Over HD DVD

Sony, the loser of the first media format war (VHS vs. Betamax) and the maker of blu-ray, is making great strides in the next battle against HD DVD.

This past week, Warner announced that the studio would release its films exclusively in blu-ray beginning in June. Today, Paramount has decided to drop its support for HD DVD as well. Both studios now join Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, and MGM as exclusive backers of the Sony format. Universal Pictures remains the sole major studio in support of HD DVD.

The recent moves to blu-ray are a sign that the studios no longer wish to partake in the format war. Robin Harris of ZDNet wrote on his blog that "DVD sales have weakened and Hollywood suspects the HD format war is part of the problem." While competition is always good for consumers, the high price tags and the uncertain future of the two competing formats have definitely been limiting their growth potential.

With generous mark-downs during the holiday shopping seasons, HD DVD and Blu-ray players still cost over $200 per unit, compared to the progressive scan DVD player at $50 or less. It's understandable that shoppers may not wish to risk hundreds of dollars on a potentially dead format, especially after they have just invested in an expensive HDTV. On the flip side, consumers might be holding off on buying soon-to-be outdated traditional DVDs in anticipation of the new format. Recently flourishing mail/web video rental market (Netflix and Blockbuster) has also contributed to the decrease in traditional DVD sales, after years of double-digit growth.

Another speculation is that Apple could soon be offering Blu-ray drives as an upgrade option for its MacBooks. On January 6th, Panasonic introduced thin Blu-ray drive for laptops. Since Apple is on the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association and Panasonic is a major manufacturer for all MacBook drives, the probability of Apple unveiling Blu-ray capable MacBooks at the next MacWorld is high.

What does this mean for consumers? Focusing on a single format will help manufacturers lower production costs and help retail stores save floor space and concentrate their marketing efforts. With analog broadcasting coming to an end, a single format would help consumers adopt digital TV and the next-gen format. If Blu-ray does win out, however, it will be a real downer for those who put down the money for a XBox 360 HD DVD add-on. But hey, no one wants to see Sony lose two media format wars in a row, right?

Will Blu Ray Play HD Discs ?

blu-ray and HD DVD are competing disc storage formats looking to replace the standard DVD format. In effect, they look to supersede the standard DVD in terms of storage capacity. Although there is always a need to improve on an existing system, these two formats have received much attention because of the imminent appearance of high definition movies, video and television. Notably, high definition movies need more storage space and this is why a search for the next generation of DVD is occurring.

Blu ray and HD DVD are fighting it out to replace the standard DVD. Much research and development has gone into creating each format and various industry giants are adopting one or the other to put into their products.

Sony and Panasonic are two big consumer electronics companies that are going with blu-ray. All their products will use the blu-ray technology.

Toshiba and NEC are supporting HD DVD and all their products will use HD DVD technology.

In terms of game consoles, the Sony Playstation 3 will use blu-ray and the Xbox from Microsoft will use HD DVD.

All these products will have backwards compatibility whereby they will be able to player the standard DVD's. However, they will not play the competitors format of disc storage. Thus blu-ray will not be able to play HD disks and vice versa.

The truth is that many big companies have so much money invested in their products, that they would want to see the opposition fail, so the last thing they will be doing is making them compatible.

Having said this, Pioneer and LG made an announcement that they would be producing a dual blu-ray/HD DVD player. This will no doubt feature two individual readers, one for blu-ray and one for HD DVD. NEC have also recently announced that they are creating a chip that can be used as the processor behind a universal player that will be able to play both blu-ray and HD DVD's. So things are happening, but you may have to wait a few years before you see products on the shelves and they might be expensive to begin with.
