Video Transcoding - The MKV Container

Among the many video containers at Matroska or MKV extension is one of the best, this new format was launched back in 2002 and currently an open source project which is available to anyone. Compared to other video containers MKV doesn't actually stand for something, it is often referred to as the Matroska multimedia container.

Matroska is an English word which is derived from the Russian word "matryoshka" which makes reference to an egg shaped doll within a doll, in the case of digital media this would represent media within the form of media which doesn't necessarily make much sense however, it is used to represent the flexibility and capability of this container.

When it comes to video transcoding the word "container" is best suited to describe what Matroska can do, this open-source project was developed in order to handle multiple video tracks which can have an amazingly high bit rate which can be compared to high-definition video and even blu-ray quality.

The video extension used for Matroska projects is .MKV and audio projects use the .MKA extension which can handle MP3, OGG and Vorbis streams. The Matroska video streams usually carry the H.264 video compression method, it may also use ACC/AC3/DTS for audio streams.

Because of the many video and audio streams this particular container can handle there are not many players which can read and decode this format. Arcos is the brand of one of the first products which was able to read this form of digital media and due to its increasing popularity it is expected that more media players would be able to handle MKV.

This multimedia format is very popular among the anime community because it was originally used to rip video streams from DVDs which had subtitles and different audio tracks, the AVI extension is also heavily used to share such content but the only difference is that AVI extensions need hard coded or external subtitles. When it comes to software, many applications are able to read the format either, this race at the much popular Windows media player can't handle such extensions, in order to solve this problem several video players which can read MKV files have been created, some examples are: the VLC player, the Core, to BS player, media player classic, virtualDub MOD, the Xbox media Center, and many others.

HD DVD Out of the Race

So it appears that Toshiba is ready to throw in the towel. Although to this point it hasn't been officially announced, a company official stated that a board meeting was to be held to determine whether to give in to the Sony BluRay high definition DVD format. They did give a good fight but it appears that Sony will be the victor in this war.

What led to the decline of the HD DVD? The key component to the rise of the BluRay seems to be marketing. Movie studios seemed to have sided with BluRay early on. There were only a few studios that were solely producing HD DVD films. That seemed of no consequence when big box giant Wal-Mart declared they would only carry BluRay products. Other retailers like Target and Blockbuster are following suit as well.

In my opinion, Wal-Mart was the straw that broke this camel's back. Days prior, Netflix had announced it would discontinue HD DVD rentals. Other retailers seem to be following right behind them.

What does this mean for the small businessman? If you are offering a product that is quite similar to that of another merchant, be sure to market your product correctly. I would like for you to think of how many times you heard a media reference to HD DVD. Now, how many times have you heard BluRay references? I think you may be surprised that if you market appropriately and intelligently, you can be the victor. The key always comes down to marketing. Make sure you market a lot and market effectively. The competitor that does this will come out on top.

Top 3 Tips for Buying an LCD TV

I want a larger screen and so do you. There is absolutely no reason for this wanting except for the feeling of power that a large screen gives you. I have no idea why it is, but we all seem to want a larger screen for our TVs these days. The question is, how to get a good deal on an LCD TV without paying a fortune. Let's give you our top 3 tips on buying an LCD TV.

1) Don't buy a used one if you don't have to. The funny thing about these TVs is that their prices drop significantly every month and that if you just wait a little longer, the price you'll pay for a new TV is probably not going to be too far off from the price that you are going to pay for a used one. A little patience might actually save you some dollars here.

2) Compare features, not just prices. One of our favorite places to go to compare prices on LCD Tvs is ConsumerReports.org. Consumer Reports was rating different items way before the internet even become popular. Remember buying your first real car? I do. And I went straight to Consumer Reports to find out that the Honda Accord was the car to buy (and still is according to CR). Shopping for a high end LCD Tv shouldn't be any different than shopping for a new car. All the resources are at your disposal, so give it a try. I'm sure you can find some gems of information at CR regarding your LCD Tv purchase.

3) HD is coming, don't miss out. High definition television has allegedly been "right around the corner" for years. Well, that time may finally have arrived. Some LCD Tvs come HD ready and some do not. Make sure your new LCD TV supports HD so that when it is finally popularized, you can watch the programs utilizing this latest technology.

And by the way, why would someone want to buy an LCD TV over a "Plasma". And what is a plasma? Are they different than LCDs? Basically yes. The big difference is that they use different technologies to deliver a picture. Both have pros and cons. However, both deliver a large screen experience to the user.

Low Price Sony Blu-Ray Player

Market is flooded with numerous digital versatile disc (DVD) players, small devices that play video and music for us. Most DVD players have to be attached to a TV to show video but now some players are arrived with an attached LCD screen and stereo speakers. DVD players play both audio and video format discs.

The quality of any audio or video output on a screen is highly influenced by the format of the disc which is being played in the player. There are some optical disc formats which are supported by one or other disc players and DVD players. They are compact disc (CD) formats, DVD formats, MP3 formats and others. These days some companies are coming up with a next generation optical disc format players. These next generation optical disc formats are known as Blu ray or Blu ray Disc (BD). These are high density optical disc formats. Blu ray Discs store digital information and also High Definition (HD) Videos.

The name 'Blu ray Disc' is quite unusual, this name is derived from the Blu violet laser which used to read and write this type of disc. More data can be stored on a Blu ray Disc than on a DVD. This is because of the shorter wavelength of Blu-violet laser, which is 405 nanometer. Almost 25 Gigabytes (GB) can be stored on a single layer BD. This is over 5 times the capacity of a single layer DVD which can store almost 4.5 GB only. On a dual layer BD we can store up to 50 GB data.

BD optical disc format was jointly developed by the blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). BDA is a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers. These include Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson. blu-ray is supported by 180 of the world's leading technology companies. These companies are major names in consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies.

The BD format has broad support from the major movie studios. In fact, majority of the prominent movie studios have released movies in the Blu-ray format. These are Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM. Six studios are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format; they are Disney, Fox, Sony, Warner, Lionsgate and MGM.

Several electronic companies are offering products that can read and write CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. Companies like Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp and LG are coming up with players with BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head. BD players are becoming popular due to that simple reason which is quality. On BD players we can play DVD also, it looks even better than before. So Blu ray DVD players are the latest buzz word in the entertainment scene, it produces clear picture with vivid colours and sharp sound.

Due to the quality it is offering, BD players are on high demand. Day by day, the demand of this next generation technology is increasing. This makes its production cost to fall. Sony Company is taking advantage from this fact and is reducing the price of its BD players. Several companies are coming ahead in manufacturing next generation BD players. Electronics Company Toshiba sells its high-definition (HD) DVD player in much less price than BD players of Sony. Now Sony is trying to get ahead in the market so it has cut £50 off the price of its BD player.

Sony's Blu-ray discs are supported by companies like Samsung, Dell and Apple, while NEC, Sanyo and others are supporting Toshiba's HD DVD. We can say that the war of formats is on. Both HDD and Blu-ray systems have almost equal functionalities, both stores large amount of data, both produce high quality image and audio, and both use a blue laser to read information. Only one difference is there, that is of price. So the price cutting step of Sony can be one added advantage of Sony BD players.

What is interesting is that all the characters attend elite academic schools and come from different family backgrounds. The actors and actresses dress in designer clothes which is another reason why the show is so popular worldwide.

Season 1 has ended with only 18 episodes due to the writers' strike. Though the show received low ratings, it is coming back again with a second season containing 24 episodes. Few months back, it was said that Gossip Girl will not be streamed online for the second season. Blu-Ray, DVD And Multi-Region, Codefree, Region Free Variations And Super-Human Vision

It gets rather complicated when trying to describe the differences between Broadcast systems and Video systems so let stick to those video systems found in VCRs, camcorders, DVD and blu-ray Disc players etc.

Those are the basic standards and none are compatible with each other. Sometimes the A/C Hertz are 50 MHz (220 volt countries) and sometimes 60Mhz (110 volt countries) and this changes the scanning results of an electron tube, LVD or Plasma etc. 60Mhz, used in the USA for example, renders the image smoother, virtually no discernible flicker. With line doubling and quad-doubling (100 and 220 MHz and then 200 and 440 MHz).

Line doubling actually interlaces the picture into a single scan that reveals the entire frame and doubling again increased the scan lines providing for an even finer resolution and there a better sense of reality to the human eye. Technically it takes the original two-field frame and creates a progressive scan (single non-interlaced frame) output. This produces a higher resolution picture both brighter and smoother.

Some 3rd party Line-quadruplers can upscale to resolutions: 1365x1024, 720P, 1080i 852x480, 1024x1024, 1024x768 and 1365x768 and even higher. When the newest technology in video images hits the world we will be seeing NHK images of more than 6000 lines, up from the maximum of 1080P today.

If they then begin to Line-quadruple an image like that who knows what the mind might achieve if plugged directly into the motherboard of the future. Perhaps an enlarging and enhancing of human vision will be needed in the order of 1,000 eyes, 360 degree views both laterally and longitudinally, 100,000,000 lines of resolution all far outpacing current human ability.

Back to PAL-NTSC for a moment.

These many video systems were created due to incompatible electrical standards such as the Hertz, due to economic exigencies and even political motivations (for example, a country didn't want its TV to be seen by another countries citizens nearby lest they get "ideas"!

With the advent of DVD disc players Hollywood producers decided to take advantage of the new electronic potential inherent in this new groundbreaking technology to better market their movies.

With movies released in VHS VCR tape versions but in 5-6 different and non-competing systems the release of movies worldwide could be staggered according to best marketing practices so rake in as much profit as possible from every country. A movie released in April in the USA didn't have to be released until the right time in South America and the idea of people in Argentina (PAL-N) wishing to buy the film from a US retailer was virtually a useless plan as the Argentine would have no VCR and no TV of the correct system to play and display the images with. PAL-N and NTSC simply do not display correctly on the wrong systems, even the speeds of recording and playback are different. This means an NTSC movie seen on a PAL or other standard would usually be in black and white, have terribly vertical scrolling problems, have a horizontal skew at the top of the picture and be in the wrong speed so even the voices were too fast or too slow. It's a mess!

Until the Japanese VCR (and at one time even Sony's BETA) makers came out with Multisystem VCRs!

Most could only play the tapes from various standards but to display them you'd also need a TV that was multisystem as well, or 2 TVs, or even 3 each being of the appropriate system you were outputting from the VCR.

To get around the need of buying a multisystem TV Panasonic came out with the incredible AG-W1 model which had a built-in digital converter which could play, record and convert to/from all of the world five current systems. It was $4,000 but was a great device producing excellent results, albeit not for broadcasting purposes.

Many people got around having buy the AGW-1 (and its subsequent progeny AGW-2 and AGW-3) by buying a Planet Omni Tenlab Digital systems converter at a fraction of the cost of the AGW-1 and using it with a multisystem VCR. In this way the image quality was the same or better and the price when way down to the consumer.

Soon AIWA came out with the much cheaper MX-1 converting multisystem VCR which wasn't a digital type but used analog converting methods which are much inferior, then Samsung, GoVideo and a few others. Samsung was the actual manufacturer for the Panasonic AGW-1 and 2 and under their own brand they came out with a wide variety of models such as the SV-3000W, SV-5000S, SV-7000W (with the unique French Secam-L tuner built-in).

Planet Omni still has some of the Panasonic, Aiwa and Samsungs left for sale. None have been made for 2-3 years and with the death of the VCR they never will be made again. People worldwide with old home movies should consider having them transferred to DVD discs which can also be converter from PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL. All countries using any system but those two will find that their tapes can be converted to PAL and will display perfectly on their TV even if the TV isn't strictly PAL.

People in an NTSC country can utilize converting services such as Planet Omni's and convert tapes or DVDs to PAL or visa-versa to NTSC rather than buying PAL-NTSC DVD recorders (which exist) and a TENLAB converter.

Since the Hollywood producers were rather OK with the incompatible VHS video standards worldwide it was a new problem with DVD disc movies.

As all SECAM countries are also PAL countries as far as their TVs being multisystem go and the same for PAL-M (Brazil) and PAL-N (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) countries, this meant that DVD movies only had to be either NTSC or PAL and they could be seen worldwide.

This wasn't very good for Hollywood filmmakers however as too many countries could then buy discs from another country and see movies straight from their first release on disc which sometimes predated even the movies official theatrical release in theaters. This meant that a citizen of a PAL country such as Italy could buy a new movie from a New Zealand (PAL) source and see the movie (with subtitles if needed) perhaps months before the film was actually released theatrically or on DVD in Italy. This infringed on the natural markets of established theater owners and retailers in Italy.

Generally when a European country gets a movie on DVD it is also available at the same time in other Euro countries, but not always. But then an English speaking person in Australia could buy the movie from a UK source and see it in English on his PAL TV.

Again, not very good for business men and bean counters.

So a new technology was embedded into each Hollywood movie shipped out to the various countries around the world. This is called REGIONAL CODES.

They divided the world, as best as they could, into 6 regions based on film release protocols.

These regional codes are built-in to both the DVD players and the DVD movie discs as well.
6 regions, 2 video standards (PAL-NTSC) making things fairly complex.

For example, Europe is PAL and REGION 2 but Japan is NTSC and yet is REGION 2!
This means that a Japanese DVD disc would play on a Japanese DVD player fine but even though it is REGION 2 it would not play on a European PAL TV even if you took the Japanese DVD player to Europe, raised the voltage from 100V to 240V and then tried to play it. The disc would spin, the player would play it but the TV could not display it...UNLESS the TV was also an NTSC multisystem TV.

So how to get around these video standards and regional codes?

The invention of a REGION FREE DVD player (aka Codefree, code free, regionfree, all zone, universal, all region etc). But is that against the law and how can it be done? What does it mean?

By licensing agreement no manufacturer of DVD players are permitted to make a region free player. Each must be set to a specific region. They can be PAL-NTSC both but the REGIONAL CODE must be specific to a certain region. The USA is Region 1... and here are all of them:

Region codes and countries

Region code Area

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1-6 flags set.

1 Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, United States and U.S. territories

2 European Union, Albania, Andorra, Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Faroe Islands, French Guiana, Georgia, Greenland, Guernsey, Iceland, Iran, Iraq, Isle of Man, Israel, Japan, Jersey, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Oman, Qatar, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Africa, Swaziland, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City State, Yemen

3 Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Taiwan

4 Caribbean, Central America, Oceania, South America (except French Guiana), Mexico

5 African countries not explicitly included in other regions, Indian subcontinent, countries included in the former Soviet Union, Belarus, Mongolia, North Korea

6 People's Republic of China (except Macau and Hong Kong)

7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1]
ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

So is it against the law to modify a DVD player and make it CODE FREE?

No, it isn't at all. Many places such as PLANET OMNI have been selling them for years. The quality of the modification rarely varies, it is generally a perfect mod so that any and all DVD movies will play but you'll need a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter to see both PAL and NTSC DVD movies.

Remember that a DVD movie is NOT a DVD-R or DVD+R disc even though it may be a movie that has been recorded.

Most DVD Codefree players will play most DVD-R & DVD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW homemade discs.

99% also play CD discs for regular music playback and many play a wide variety of other formats such as MP3, WMA, DVD-Video, Video CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, audio CD-R & CD-RW, WMA, & JPEG and JPEG and Kodak JPEG.

So, a REGION FREE DVD player can play all regions and both PAL and NTSC discs, IE every known type of DVD movie on earth, but what if you don't have a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter?

Besides the fact that you can buy those items there are also CONVERTING Region free DVD players.

Some can convert a PAL DVD movie to NTSC and some can do both that and converter a USA NTSC disc to PAL.

And some can do both but if you ever get a PAL-NTSC TV you can turn OFF the conversion and then see everything, all DVD movies from all countries in all standards on any the TV in the ORIGINAL PICTURE quality. Again, on-line shops such as Planet Omni carry this type as well.

These Codefree, Converting players can be even the most advanced units with all the latest bells and whistles certainly including things like DTS STEREO, Dolby Digital, HDMI and DVI output, 5.1 and higher stereo channel output, Progressive scan and so forth.

But now let's consider what this means as regards the blu-ray Disc players that are Multi-region.

As HD DVD is dead as a Hi-Def format we consider that blu-ray Disc players and movies on Blu-Ray discs are here to stay until the next leap into the future hits us which may happen around 2012 with the entry of the latest 6,000 Line Super-Hi Definition TVs, some 6 x more realistic and 3D appearing than Blu-Ray and 1080P technology.

As with DVD region Blu-Ray discs and players also have regions, called Region A, B and C.
These are non-compatible regions which include PAL-SECAM-NTSC and all other systems.
The beauty of a Region A or B Blu-Ray disc when played in a Multi-region Blu-Ray disc player via the HDMI output (that is a single cable combining all audio and video signals) is that the TV doesn't have to be Pal-NTSC-Secam or anything specific at all. As long as the TV has an HDMI input all Blu-Ray Disc movies from Regions A and B will play in their full glory and, depending on the maximum resolution possible of each TV, in the highest quality possible. Pal and NTSC no longer exist in the HDMI world, the problems of Hertz, government controls and so forth, Gone with the Wind!

However, there are still Regions A, B and C.

For the Hollywood production companies these 3 Regions are still important, but not as once they were.

Do know that a Blu-Ray Disc movie output thru the regular component, S-Video or composite (A/V RCA cables) still requite the proper standard to view movies with, PAL for a PAL disc and NTSC for an NTSC disc. But in TVs there are no regions so any PAL-NTSC TV can display any PAL or NTSC DVD.

In the case of the Sony BDP-S300 multi-region version available now (110 volt version) you can pop in any Blu-Ray Disc movie from the A and B countries seen below and on any TV with an HDMI input you can see the entirety of any library.

The Sony BDP-S300 multi-region player has been highlyrated by many including reviews such as: "I am delighted with my Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player. It has excellent audio and visual definition. The crystalline clarity of 1080p Blu-ray Disc movies and DVD upscaling brings your DVDs to the highest resolution possible. Purchase this product and you will not be disappointed."

The Blu-Ray Disc Regions are as seen here:

A/North America, Central America, South America, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia.

B/Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, plus all of Oceania.

C/India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central, and South Asia.
The future of Blu-Ray Disc type technology?

In January 2007, Hitachi previewed a 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, which has four layers containing 25 GB each. Unlike TDK and Panasonic's 100 GB discs, they Hitachi claims this disc is readable on a standard Blu-ray Disc drive a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives.

Many other iterations and variations of the Blu-Ray milieu are popping up including such novel notions as BD9 / BD5 Blu-ray Disc, AVCREC, Blu-ray Disc recordable, HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc hybrid discs, HD VMD/Versatile Multilayer Disc (new low-profile competitor) AVCHD, Digital Multilayer Disk - the successor technology to Fluorescent Multilayer Disc, Enhanced Versatile Disc (EVD), Forward Versatile Disc (FVD) - Taiwanese backed red laser format, Fluorescent Multilayer Disc, Holographic Versatile Disc - standards with 200 and 300 GB storage are under development 3D optical data storage - a next-generation technology expected to provide TB-capacity discs, Protein-coated disc, Tapestry Media, Ultra Density Optical LS-R - a "layer selection" technology allowing the stacking of very large numbers of DVD-like data layers in a single disc, Professional Disc for DATA (PDD or ProDATA) and much more.

Will there still be Regions? Who knows but there will always be a better genius to overcome them.

Multi-region Blu-Ray Players now available! REGION FREE DVD players/recorders and High Definition, HD DVD players,Advanced Optical players/recorders in Blu-Ray DVD players/recorders. How to Download the Incredible Hulk Full Movie Safely Online

So you're looking to download the new movie The Incredible Hulk? Well first off you're going to need a safe and reliable download site. There are several factors to take into consideration when choosing a download site. The first and most important thing is that "free" download sites are seldom free at all. They are generally scams and virus breeding grounds. Avoiding these sites is probably the safest thing you can do when downloading movies online. So where should you download movies from? Well you should invest in a movie download site that charges a small one time membership fees. These fees are extremely cheap when you consider the price of gas these days and what a single trip to the movie theater really costs. When choosing which of these sites to sign up with there are several factors to consider.

The first of these is available movie selection. The best movie download sites grant access to over 80 million files. These files are made up of movies, television programs, sporting events, video games and more. With such a large and varied selection you will never be bored again.

One of the most important things to consider is download speed. You don't want to spend all day downloading The Incredible Hulk, so make sure the site offers unlimited bandwidth. Also check that there are no content, search, or time restrictions.

Another important thing to consider is picture quality. Make sure the site offers nothing less than DVD quality movie downloads. Watching poor quality movies is a severe waste of your time and money.

After taking these things into account you should be able to choose a safe and reliable movie download site. The only thing left to do is enjoy countless hours of your favorite movies.

It is also the only game console that able to act as blu-ray disc player in the market now. What is a blu-ray Disc player? It is similar to the DVD players that most of us know, just that it use to run Blu-Ray disc.

A piece of Blu-Ray disc can save data up to 54 Gigs whereby normal double layer DVD disc can only save data up to 9 Gigs.

In shorts, by having more storage space in the Blu-Ray disc, it can carry 6 times more data than the DVD we use now; which able to contribute high definition effects to the TV pictures that shown on the screen.

You can use the PlayStation 3 console to watch HD movies if you want to

Before that, you need to have a set of HDTV (either plasma TV or LCD flat screen TV will do, just that LCD is better for your health since it do not spread any radiation effects )and HDMI Cable (High Definition Multimedia Interface) to connect from your PlayStation 3 to your High Definition TV in order to have these HD effects.

Let me explain in a bit more here

HD means "high definition". You know, our TV screen picture is build up by lot of small pixels just like our PC screen. If the TV screen picture is build up by more pixels, the picture will become more clear and sharp; and more pixels will required more storage space that pictures produce by Blu-Ray Disc will be much higher quality compare to DVD disc, because it has more storage space to carry more pixels.

HDTV able to shown all the small pixels in the TV screen and you need HDMI cable to transmit large volume of pixels from your Playstation 3 to your HDTV to give you HD effects. Are you getting more clear now?

You might also want to increase your movie or gaming experience by attached a home theater system to your HDTV to enhance the audio effects which can up to 7.1 channels.

You shall buy Pioneer brands seem they are so popular in the market for the high quality sound that they are able to produce.

Which model you shall buy? Of course, higher price contribute higher sound quality. You just need to justify between quality and budget by yourself

Beside Blu-Ray disc player, you can use some model of the PlayStation 3 to play majority of the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games.

Why I say some model? There are 4 models of PlayStation 3 which can commonly get in the market :-

1. 20GB Console - have the least hard disk space and unable to connect your PlayStation 3 to internet.

However, it is integrate with Emotion Engine that allow you to play majority of the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games.

2. 40GB Console & 80 GB Console - can allow your PlayStation 3 online but unable to play majority of the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games

3. 60 GB console that allow you to play majority of the PS1 and PS2 games and even online games.

It is better to get 60GB console if this is your first PlayStation console since there are also quite a few of nice PS1 and PS2 games that worth to play.

Besides, it allow you to play online PlayStation games. In fact, the major selling point of PlayStation 3 games are online games that allow you to battle with other hardcore gamers from worldwide.

You will not getting bored with a single game since your opponent have turn into smart humans; and game developers are happy as well since they just need to maintain their game server and no need to worry the pirated copy of the PS3 games to exist.

Why? If you buy the pirated copy, you are unable to play the online game

You can even download the trial version of PlayStation 3 games and play for free before buying the game. If you not happy with it, just delete it and look into next game

Plasma Vs LCD TV and Ambient Light

Until not to long ago, ambient light was the main argument you had in choosing LCD over plasma. With today's models, though it remains a factor that helps you decide which technology to choose, it is not as decisive as it was before. The light can affect the picture quality in two ways.

First of all, if the screen material is highly reflective a lot of light will bounce from it. In a real life scenario this happens in a sunny day when a lot of sunlight enters the window and hits the screen from an angle that makes it reflect directly into your eyes. In this situation the screen acts as a mirror and instead of seeing what it is displayed on the screen you see that annoying light that reflects from it. This happens because the amount of sunlight that hits the screen and bounces from it is much higher than the amount of light the screen produces. Depending on how reflective the screen is and the angle from which the sunlight comes, this effect can be more or less disturbing. Same effect appears from other powerful light sources - like your light bulbs - but it is less disturbing. In most cases the light from light bulbs is very weak compared to sunlight so this effect is either invisible or almost unnoticeable.

The second way in which light affects the picture quality has to do with your eyes not the TV. Your eyes are built in such way that they adapt to the amount of light around. When you watch TV in a dark room, most if not all light that enters your eyes is coming from the TV. In a well lit room a lot of the light that your eyes capture is ambient light coming from the window, light bulbs or reflected by the walls and objects in the room. In this situation your eyes get more light from the environment and less from the TV itself. So when you watch TV in darkness the picture quality looks better because your eyes capture all the light from the TV and you perceive a better contrast, luminosity and saturation - which are the most important factors that affect picture quality. When you watch TV in a well lit room the ambient light will overlap with the TV light and it will make it look more washed and the colors will be less intense.

Generally Plasma TV screens are more reflective than LCD screens. At the same time, a plasma TV tends to offer better picture quality than LCD TVs in an environment with controlled lighting (a dark room). Because of these characteristics of plasma and LCD TV, they are recommended generally for different situations - plasma TVs for people who watch TV with lights turned off or dimmed and LCD TV for people who watch TV during daytime and have a lot of light in the room. If you have an averagely lit room then both TVs perform similarly.

There are exceptions however. Technology is evolving and plasma TVs now have an ace in their sleeve. To find out what is the plasma TV feature that makes them perform in a well lit room at a level comparable with LCD, follow the link titled Plasma vs LCD TV at the bottom of this page. Why Should I Buy a Playstation 3?

Quick Disclaimer: The author of these articles loves video games and does not have any bias towards any of the video games systems. He reviews them objectively based on many different factors including games available, other features, price etc. End Disclaimer.

Sony's Playstation 3 system got off to quite a rough start. It was released towards the end of 2006 and had two gargantuan 500 and 600 dollar price points. Many gamers scoffed at the idea of paying this when they could have the Xbox 360 for nearly half the price or the the Nintendo Wii for a mere 250 dollars. However that was in 2006; this is 2008 nearly two years after the launch of the Playstation 3. Is it worth the purchase?

The PS3 is still the most expensive system on the market, coming in at 400 dollars. However for the money you will be getting a very feature rich system that includes a varied library of games, including some AAA exclusive titles, and a system that is built to be the base of your entertainment center with its built-in blu-ray player. The online system, called the Playstation Network, is very feature rich for being a free service but has not quite caught up to the Xbox Live system that Microsoft has on the 360. However for gamers who have a little extra money to spend they will not be disappointed with everything the Playstation 3 has to offer.

First off the most important part of any system is the games that it has to offer. The Playstation 3 has many exclusives that appeal to many fans such as Metal Gear Solid 4 or the recently released LittleBigPlanet fans are sure to find something they like. My personal favorites are Uncharted, Resistance 2, and the two mentioned above. The first time players land on the tropical island in Uncharted is breathtaking. These exclusive games take true advantage of the hardware that Sony has created and it really shows. They are optimized to look and run their best on this system.

Of course the PS3 is home to many multiplatform games as well including Fallout 3, Dead Space and Soul Calibur IV. One issue that has plagued some multiplatform games on the PS3 is the shoddiness of some of the ports. Two immediate examples come to mind: The Orange Box and Fallout 3. These are two great games that are noticeably worse on the PS3 than the other platforms they are on. The Orange Box has much longer load times and Team Fortress is nearly unplayable due to lag issues. Unfortunately it does not seem likely that a patch will be released anytime soon. Fallout is not as bad but my major issue with it is that when someone on your friends list signs online the game freezes for about 4 seconds. It is terrible that this made it into the final game but luckily the game is still great.

One other issue that irks many players with the Playstation 3 is the mandatory installs for some games. It does not seem to effect exclusive titles as much (with the notable exception of Metal Gear Solid 4) however multiplatform titles that run great on the Xbox 360 require a 5GB install to before they even work on PS3. Devil May Cry 4 is the worst offender of this; taking nearly 20 minutes to install. However some games like Soul Calibur 4 have an optional install that speeds up loading times. This is a great idea and much better than mandatory installs that may be because of laziness in a port or simply because the PS3 has a slower speed drive.

A big perk for many people coming into the HDTV age is the inclusion of blu-ray in every PS3. This is a big reason why blu-ray won the format wars against HD-DVD and also is something that may push some gamers over the edge if they have trouble deciding between exclusive titles. Also since all the games are on blu-ray instead of DVD it would seem that as developers create bigger and bigger games PS3 may be the platform of choice because of all the extra benefits of blu-ray.

The Playstation Network is also a nice free bonus for every PS3 owner. Not only does it allow gamers to battle it out over the internet it also provides plenty of media to download. A perk of the PS3 is that it uses standard laptop hard drives; making it much easier and cost-efficient to upgrade the hard drive in it when compared to the Xbox 360.

Overall the PS3 is a great example of how a system can change in a matter of 2 years. Many people are down on the PS3 because of its price or they still feel like it has a lack of games. However the PS3 has a huge library of games and the exclusives on the system are what is going to make or break it for people. It may have lost quite a few of exclusives to the Xbox 360 over the past few years but it still has many break out games that fans of video games need to get their hands on.

Progressive Versus Interlaced

blu-ray technology is a high definition technology capable of picture resolution of up to 1920 x 1080. You may have heard of various types of high definition output including1080i and 1080p. The number 1080 refers to the lines of horizontal resolution. Compare this to the maximum of 576 lines of resolution for high-quality DVDs and you’ll see why high definition programming looks so good. The initials following 1080 refers to the either interlaced (i) or progressive (p) scans.

To understand the difference between interlaced and progressive scanning, you must understand how television images are typically composed. Two fields create one frame. Each field is interlaced so that when combined together, they create a full image called a frame. In television, 30 frames are shown per second, or 60 fields per second. 1080i indicates a picture’s resolution using interlaced. This results into a high resolution image with television-like quality.

Progressive images dispense with the fields and display progressive, multiple full frames. 1080p indicates a high resolution image that appears more like film. blu-ray disc offers the higher quality 1080p video resolution. In fact, this HDTV video quality is the premier option available far surpassing any other medium or broadcast format currently on the market.

Blu-ray players and Blu-ray recorders also feature up to 54 Mbps bandwidth which is about twice that of a normal HDTV broadcast making the video quality of Blu-ray disc even more impressive. If you think that’s good enough, there’s more. The Blu-ray disc format doesn’t require tight compression algorithms that often compromise picture quality because of the huge storage capacity. In addition, Blu-ray disc players can also handle other formats such as standard-definition TV. In fact, Blu-ray recorders can record up to 23 hours of standard television.

So no matter what you want, the highest quality for HDTV or huge amounts of storage capacity, Blu-ray technology is the perfect fit.
