Lowering Cost of Technology Could be Decisive in HD Disc Format War

As the hold that Sony's blu-ray high def DVD format has on the market continues to get stronger in the face of opposition from the competing HD-DVD format, there are a number of things that Sony could do in order to secure a sure victory. One of them is lowering the cost of its blu-ray disc players.

There's a lot of evidence to support the idea that this move would make for a sure victory over HD-DVD. Most of this evidence comes in the form of sales statistics. Right now, despite the fact that Blu-ray players cost roughly twice as much as HD-DVD players, there are just as many Blu-ray disc players in American homes as there are HD-DVD players. When you add in the number of Sony's Play Station 3 video game consoles- which also function as Blu-ray players- the number of Blu-ray players in American homes is significantly higher than the number of HD-DVD players out there. Combine those statistics with the fact that Blu-ray discs have outsold HD-DVD's in the past couple of months by a margin of over two to one, and it becomes pretty obvious that consumers as a whole like the Blu-ray format more than the HD-DVD format.

There are several reasons why the Blu-ray format may be more popular among consumers than the HD-DVD format. The most obvious technical difference is that the Blu-ray format can encode a lot more data onto each disc than the HD-DVD format can. This translates into longer movies and more bonus features that can be included on Blu-ray discs. Since both High Def DVD formats are also optical discs just like DVD's and CD's, there are plenty of computer applications for the technology as well. More data storage capacity translates into being able to deliver more software on each Blu-ray disc than on an HD-DVD disc. Blu-ray is also a better choice for data archiving than HD-DVD. Specifically, the HD-DVD format can only store fifteen gigabytes of data per side of the disc while Blu-ray can store twenty five gigabytes of data per side of the same sized disc! With that kind of a difference, it could be argued that even if HD-DVD was the winner of the format war, it would end up being replaced by something like Blu-ray anyway. Using Blu-ray now, just skips that step.

With the overall popularity of Blu-ray, Sony could secure its win in the format war by lowering the prices of its players. Losses of profits from the players could more than be made up for in coming years by licensing and royalties from having a monopoly on the high def DVD market. Also, as the cost of producing Blu-ray players goes down, Sony will eventually be able to profit on sales of them as well. Unfortunately Sony has been unwilling to make that effort so far, but another company called Funai will force the price of Blu-ray players down by introducing their own Blu-ray players onto the market that will cost around five hundred dollars a piece- a figure much more in line with what HD-DVD players cost.

It's interesting that a little known company could secure a victory in the format war for Sony by doing what Sony has so far refused to do for itself.

Holographic Storage Kills BluRay?

Holographic storage ships next month. The technology was in the works for decades before becoming a reality. Every now and then I read about something and go "wow - that's the future!". I remember when I was a kid in the 80's and my day telling me about computer storage and memory doubling nearly every six months. He also told me "someday you'll be able to carry your 30 albums or your entire record collection on a small postage stamp sized chip in your pocket." It seemed like something out of the movies back then, and yet my 4GB SD Flash card for my digital camera can hold about 1,000 songs which I guess is about 75-80 CD's (and it's about the size of a postage stamp).

We've all seen a holograph in a sci-fi movie. A holograph is a projected image that, if you moved around it, would actually have perspective form different angles. A holograph is a true "3D image". So, how do you turn a holograph into storage? Technically a holograph IS storage, because it stores information about the image to be projected. A hologram uses 2 laser beams. A reference and illumination beam create an interference pattern on photo sensitive media. Shine a laser on that reference pattern and get an image in 3D - simple as that. Robin Harris brings up to good points in that article, the first being that a small fraction of the reference data can reconstruct the entire 3D images (you just can't move as far around it). This means that unlike a CD or DVD, if the photo sensitive media is scratched it doesn't (completely) destroy the data. Imagine data that can "reconstruct itself" from the remaining bits. His other point was that the amount of storage is just about limitless. By changing the reference point and illumination of the beams different holographs can be produced - so hundreds (or more) could be stored in the exact same space on the media.

Oh - did I mention the fact that photographic media has a lifespan of over 100 years, so holographic storage has the longest lifespan of any media to date. The company that created this holographic storage technology is "InPhase" and the first units will be shipped for $18,000 next month. One disk costs $180 and stores 300GB.

Why do we care? For the same reason that both CD and DVD players were thousands when they first came out. This is the future of technology. Movie studios with long term storage needs will gladly pay $18,000 for this device, but as the prices drop I think that this kind of technology will be something that consumers need. You can buy a half-terabyte drive at your local Wal-Mart now for $100. I think it's great to be able to back up all of our digital pictures and music on an external drive for our home network. But as time goes on I will need multiple ones, and eventually some will fail - and eventually I'll lose some really cherished memories. I think that's why a lot of people I know print out so many digital pictures on photo paper - they know that if somehow the digital copy is lost, the printed version should last a lifetime. If InPhase eventually created a consumer version holographic storage drive, wouldn't you buy one? I mean come on, you could store you family digital photos knowing that the media would be good up to 100 years. I know of no other storage technology other than printed photos themselves that could give you that kind of piece of mind.

Think about the industry uses this could bring. Movie theaters could ship out their blockbusters to the theaters on these disks knowing the quality wouldn't diminish no matter how many times they were rented out. Web hosts could practically offer "uncorruptable backups". You may not know this, but your local cable company usually has movies "downloaded" on their local server for the video "on demand" services you can watch. With holographic storage they could store tens of thousands of movies for you to watch, and not just hundreds. Unbelievable amounts of data could be stored in black boxes of planes, trains, and automobiles. You could possibly take your entire entertainment system from your living room to your car on one disk. Entire textbooks could begin to be stored on disk cartridges to be read in standard readers and books in schools and universities would not only be cheaper, but the quality of the content would never diminish (just the hardware readers to view them).

So that's why I think holographic storage is a future BluRay killer. How many years will that be? I don't know. It took 20 years for holographic storage to become a real piece of hardware you could buy. I don't think that it will be 20 more years before what I envision comes true, but it's certainly possible within the next 5-10. 3-D HDTV With DLP

3D is an exciting new feature for the home theater market. For some dramatic movies or soap operas, 3D might seem out of place. But for sports, action movies, etc. 3D makes as much difference as color vs. black and white. And the new 3D technology is superior to the 3D system that has been used in theaters.

The commercial successes of recent 3D films like "Beowulf", "Meet the Robinsons", and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", is sparking interest with the movie studios to produce more 3D content material. Disney, Universal, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Thomson and IMAX are currently exploring the potential 3D HDTV market. Disney said it would begin making all its computer-animated films in 3D. According to Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, all of the major studios have 3D projects under way. There will be over 2,500 theatre screens equipped with the Digital 3D technology by the end of 2009. All of this content will be available to the home theater market. The Big Question: will the 3D market be pervasive enough for major networks, especially the sports subset, to broadcast in 3D?

3D Distribution

It will likely be the satellite TV companies like DirecTV and Dish Network that distribute 3D versions of HDTV programming first. 3D movies should take about the same bandwidth as other 120 fps (frame per second) high def movies. The satellite companies have enough broadcast bandwidth to support niche markets (the cable companies do not), and for now, 3D HDTV is a niche market.

"Satellite's going to be constrained not so much by how many channels they can carry than by how many they can get," said Bob Scherman, Satellite Business News.

By 2010, it is projected that 60% of TV receivers in the United States will use a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

3D HDTV Home Theater Systems

Because of the high frame rate for 3D, and the need for synchronization, LCD screens are generally incompatible with advanced 3D. However, prototypes by Phillips have been demonstrated at upwards of $20,000, and this technology does not require glasses. The Phillips technology is optically very complicated. Unlike electronics, it cannot be assumed that the price will come down.

By the end of this year (2008), more than one million 3D ready DLP HDTVs, manufactured by Mitsubishi and Samsung, will have been sold in the U.S. The technology functions by supplying a 60 Hz signal to each eye (equivalent to 120 Hz total). These sets can display standard HDTV, and are compatible with 3D material. Some source material is available for download, and blu-ray 3D discs are becoming available. The Glasses: Field Sequential 3D

Special glasses are used with the DLP 3D system. The system is called "Field Sequential 3D" or HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential). This technology uses electronic shutter glasses instead of red-blue lenses we are used to at the movies. The effect is definitely superior. Our eyes see a slightly offset view of a scene. The two slightly different views are combined by the brain to result in our ability to see in 3D. Field Sequential 3D simulates this experience with shutter glasses. The shutter is not mechanical, but instead an LCD filter, that blocks vision when the opposite eye's view is shown.

A HDTV set with 120 Hz refresh rate is recommended for 3D viewing. The 3D system uses half of the total information for each eye. If we use a TV with a total of 60 Hz refresh rate, it would supply only 30 Hz to each eye, and that refresh rate would be visible (flicker).

When designing a 3D system with previous 3D techniques, we have the choice of either sending two equal bandwidth signals with full information, effectively doubling the signal bandwidth, or sending the signal such that either the horizontal or vertical resolution is halved, one half for each eye. Doubling the bandwidth would be a problem since the HDTV signal bandwidth capacity is already at a premium. Using the same bandwidth as non-3D material means that we can utilize the technology with current HDMI or DVI interfaces.

The alternative to cut resolution is unattractive, since we have worked to so hard to increase our system to high definition, we don't want to compromise. By using alternate frames for each eye, we see a high definition signal without flicker.

Two sets of wireless shutter glasses, with a control transmitter (InfraRed (IR), the same technology as the TV's remote control) cost about $100.

"Hang-Ups" Holding up DLP

Many consumers have a fascination with the idea of hanging their new big screen HDTV on the wall, like a painting. It's worth noting that most LCD and Plasma big screen TVs never actually get mounted on the wall. It is a significant challenge to mount something that weighs 60-150 pounds on the wall, and once installed, it's a continuing challenge for maintenance (for example, a 50 inch Pioneer PDP-5070HD weighs 128 pounds).

According to the NPD Group, only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners have their set mounted on the wall.

DLP is very popular among those who want larger high picture quality screens at affordable prices. For the money, DLP easily provides the highest quality-size value. An LCD of the same size and price will not have the picture quality of a DLP. DLP is also available in larger screen sizes then LCD televisions.

However, a DLP rear projection TV is a few inches thicker than an LCD or Plasma screen. LCD screens are usually 7-10 inches thick; DLP sets are usually 12-17 inches thick. Because of the fascination with mounting their sets on the wall, this difference of a few inches becomes the deciding factor for many consumers' purchase decisions.

Texas Instruments, who manufactures the DLP chips in a foundry in South Korea, sees renewed potential for the technology, which uses tiny mirrors on a semiconductor. The new LED Light Engine call "Phlatlight" (manufactured by Luminus) replaces the arc lamp and color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs. Samsung has had their own proprietary LED lamp system for a couple of years. The LED Light Engine will need to be replaced infrequently (unlike the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps that had to be replaced every few years).

DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than comparably sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color wheel in the design means they perform with less noise. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off more than 15,000 times per second to deliver a picture without blur for fast moving images such as sports.

DLP HDTV sets are a very smart choice for most people, but be selective. Many of the HDTV sets in stores still do not have important technology, such as LED backlights.

The compatibility of the TV for 3D can be verified by looking for an input on the back of unit, marked "3D Ready".

Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC)

An important trend in the home theater is the integration of the personal computer (PC) with the home theater. Many thousands of people purchase their first plasma screen TV each year. They invest a significant amount of money to obtain a plasma screen which offers top of the line color accuracy, vibrancy, and clarity to enhance their family's viewing experience. Once the television is delivered however, it's important for plasma buyers to take the time to become familiar with the proper care of the screen to assure many years of trouble free viewing enjoyment. Plasma screens aren't really "high maintenance" but observing a few tips offered here can extend the life of the screen.

o Provide a solid foundation: Be sure the plasma screen is placed (or mounted) in an area where it will not be "knocked around" or will accidentally fall.

o Don't get burnt: Although anti-burn in technology has advanced greatly over the years, it is best to avoid leaving static images on the screen. This means that images should not be paused on the screen for extended periods of time and stations which present a static block/image on the screen should be viewed on a limited basis as well. Hooking your PC up to a plasma screen is also inadvisable as they are often used to display static images.

o Help your plasma TV weather the storm: This is just common sense; use a surge protector.

o Prevent pre-mature aging: The final word of caution; turn plasma screens off when not in use. This can help avoid accidental burn in, reduce heat, and help to avoid decreased brightness/pre-mature aging.

blu-ray is a cutting-edge, high-definition optical disc that can store significantly more data than a standard DVD. A single-layer blu-ray disc can store approximately 25 gigabytes of data: five times the amount of a standard single-layer DVD. Dual-layer Blu-ray discs can store twice the amount as single-layer discs, and about eight times the amount of a standard dual-layer DVD.

A standard DVD contains enough space for a two-hour, non-high-definition movie, plus a few extra features. A Blu-ray disc allows enough space for 13 hours of standard footage or two hours of high-definition video. In addition, Blu-ray discs allow you to skip instantly anywhere on the disc; record one show while watching another; edit and reorder the footage on the disc; and access the web to download subtitles and other extras.

All DVD's and CD's store information as a series of grooves on the recording surface of the disc. The grooves are written in a spiral that winds from the center of the disc to the outside edge. On one side, the grooves appear as pits; on the other, they stand out as bumps. To read the disc, a player shines a laser over the bumpy side of the disc. The bumps cause the laser to bounce back and register on a sensor.

Standard CD and DVD players use a red laser to read the information on a disc. Blu-ray compatible players use a blue laser. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light. This makes the laser itself more sensitive and capable of detecting much smaller grooves than a red laser can.

Because the blue laser can detect smaller grooves, the information on a Blu-ray disc can be written much smaller than on a standard disc. This is why a Blu-ray disc can contain so much more information than a standard CD or DVD, even though the discs are the same size.

Blu-ray discs are constructed differently than standard discs. These differences in construction eliminate some of the design flaws in standard DVD's. One of these flaws is birefringence. In a standard DVD, the recorded data is set between two polycarbonate layers. The laser must shine through a layer of polycarbonate in order to reach the data.

Occasionally, the polycarbonate can split the laser into two beams instead of allowing it to penetrate, making the player unable to read the disc. The process of lining up the polycarbonate layers must be done with great precision to prevent birefringence. In addition, the laser beam can become distorted if the disc is not perfectly level inside the player, a problem called "disc tilt."

On a Blu-ray disc, the data is printed on top of the polycarbonate layer. With the data on top, the laser does not have to shine through polycarbonate in order to read it-and the problem of birefringence is eliminated. This simplifies the manufacturing process, and keeps the cost of Blu-ray discs down. In addition, the data's location brings it closer to the lens that reads the laser. This makes disc tilt much less of an issue.

Blu-ray stores more data, reads more clearly, and provides interactive features you can't get on a standard DVD. There aren't many drawbacks to Blu-ray, but there are a few.

Blu-ray discs require different equipment to manufacture. Despite the ease of making these discs in comparison with standard DVD's, manufacturers still have to invest in new machinery to make them. This may give a slight edge to Blu-ray's major competitor: HD-DVD. HD-DVD is another type of high-definition DVD that can be manufactured using the same equipment used for standard DVD's. It stores less information, but it's also less expensive.

Blu-ray discs aren't more expensive than standard discs, but Blu-ray players tend to be significantly more expensive than HD-DVD players. You can buy players that will play standard formats along with either HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but no player can read both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray have strong support in the market, but neither one has yet gained an edge over the other. Like format wars of past eras, many consumers are reluctant to invest in an expensive new player when they don't know if the format they choose will survive. However, Blu-ray is a strong contender, and it just might emerge victorious.

So it appears that Toshiba is ready to throw in the towel. Although to this point it hasn't been officially announced, a company official stated that a board meeting was to be held to determine whether to give in to the Sony BluRay high definition DVD format. They did give a good fight but it appears that Sony will be the victor in this war.

What led to the decline of the HD DVD? The key component to the rise of the BluRay seems to be marketing. Movie studios seemed to have sided with BluRay early on. There were only a few studios that were solely producing HD DVD films. That seemed of no consequence when big box giant Wal-Mart declared they would only carry BluRay products. It gets rather complicated when trying to describe the differences between Broadcast systems and Video systems so let stick to those video systems found in VCRs, camcorders, DVD and blu-ray Disc players etc.

Those are the basic standards and none are compatible with each other. Sometimes the A/C Hertz are 50 MHz (220 volt countries) and sometimes 60Mhz (110 volt countries) and this changes the scanning results of an electron tube, LVD or Plasma etc. 60Mhz, used in the USA for example, renders the image smoother, virtually no discernible flicker. With line doubling and quad-doubling (100 and 220 MHz and then 200 and 440 MHz).

Line doubling actually interlaces the picture into a single scan that reveals the entire frame and doubling again increased the scan lines providing for an even finer resolution and there a better sense of reality to the human eye. Technically it takes the original two-field frame and creates a progressive scan (single non-interlaced frame) output. This produces a higher resolution picture both brighter and smoother.

Some 3rd party Line-quadruplers can upscale to resolutions: 1365x1024, 720P, 1080i 852x480, 1024x1024, 1024x768 and 1365x768 and even higher. When the newest technology in video images hits the world we will be seeing NHK images of more than 6000 lines, up from the maximum of 1080P today.

With movies released in VHS VCR tape versions but in 5-6 different and non-competing systems the release of movies worldwide could be staggered according to best marketing practices so rake in as much profit as possible from every country. A movie released in April in the USA didn't have to be released until the right time in South America and the idea of people in Argentina (PAL-N) wishing to buy the film from a US retailer was virtually a useless plan as the Argentine would have no VCR and no TV of the correct system to play and display the images with. PAL-N and NTSC simply do not display correctly on the wrong systems, even the speeds of recording and playback are different. This means an NTSC movie seen on a PAL or other standard would usually be in black and white, have terribly vertical scrolling problems, have a horizontal skew at the top of the picture and be in the wrong speed so even the voices were too fast or too slow. It's a mess!

Until the Japanese VCR (and at one time even Sony's BETA) makers came out with Multisystem VCRs!

Most could only play the tapes from various standards but to display them you'd also need a TV that was multisystem as well, or 2 TVs, or even 3 each being of the appropriate system you were outputting from the VCR.

To get around the need of buying a multisystem TV Panasonic came out with the incredible AG-W1 model which had a built-in digital converter which could play, record and convert to/from all of the world five current systems. It was $4,000 but was a great device producing excellent results, albeit not for broadcasting purposes.

Many people got around having buy the AGW-1 (and its subsequent progeny AGW-2 and AGW-3) by buying a Planet Omni Tenlab Digital systems converter at a fraction of the cost of the AGW-1 and using it with a multisystem VCR. In this way the image quality was the same or better and the price when way down to the consumer.

Soon AIWA came out with the much cheaper MX-1 converting multisystem VCR which wasn't a digital type but used analog converting methods which are much inferior, then Samsung, GoVideo and a few others. Samsung was the actual manufacturer for the Panasonic AGW-1 and 2 and under their own brand they came out with a wide variety of models such as the SV-3000W, SV-5000S, SV-7000W (with the unique French Secam-L tuner built-in).

Planet Omni still has some of the Panasonic, Aiwa and Samsungs left for sale. None have been made for 2-3 years and with the death of the VCR they never will be made again. People worldwide with old home movies should consider having them transferred to DVD discs which can also be converter from PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL. All countries using any system but those two will find that their tapes can be converted to PAL and will display perfectly on their TV even if the TV isn't strictly PAL.

People in an NTSC country can utilize converting services such as Planet Omni's and convert tapes or DVDs to PAL or visa-versa to NTSC rather than buying PAL-NTSC DVD recorders (which exist) and a TENLAB converter.

Since the Hollywood producers were rather OK with the incompatible VHS video standards worldwide it was a new problem with DVD disc movies.

As all SECAM countries are also PAL countries as far as their TVs being multisystem go and the same for PAL-M (Brazil) and PAL-N (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) countries, this meant that DVD movies only had to be either NTSC or PAL and they could be seen worldwide.

This wasn't very good for Hollywood filmmakers however as too many countries could then buy discs from another country and see movies straight from their first release on disc which sometimes predated even the movies official theatrical release in theaters. This meant that a citizen of a PAL country such as Italy could buy a new movie from a New Zealand (PAL) source and see the movie (with subtitles if needed) perhaps months before the film was actually released theatrically or on DVD in Italy. This infringed on the natural markets of established theater owners and retailers in Italy.

Generally when a European country gets a movie on DVD it is also available at the same time in other Euro countries, but not always. But then an English speaking person in Australia could buy the movie from a UK source and see it in English on his PAL TV.

Again, not very good for business men and bean counters.

So a new technology was embedded into each Hollywood movie shipped out to the various countries around the world. This is called REGIONAL CODES.

They divided the world, as best as they could, into 6 regions based on film release protocols.

These regional codes are built-in to both the DVD players and the DVD movie discs as well.
6 regions, 2 video standards (PAL-NTSC) making things fairly complex.

For example, Europe is PAL and REGION 2 but Japan is NTSC and yet is REGION 2!
This means that a Japanese DVD disc would play on a Japanese DVD player fine but even though it is REGION 2 it would not play on a European PAL TV even if you took the Japanese DVD player to Europe, raised the voltage from 100V to 240V and then tried to play it. The disc would spin, the player would play it but the TV could not display it...UNLESS the TV was also an NTSC multisystem TV.

So how to get around these video standards and regional codes?

The invention of a REGION FREE DVD player (aka Codefree, code free, regionfree, all zone, universal, all region etc). But is that against the law and how can it be done? What does it mean?

By licensing agreement no manufacturer of DVD players are permitted to make a region free player. Each must be set to a specific region. They can be PAL-NTSC both but the REGIONAL CODE must be specific to a certain region. The USA is Region 1... and here are all of them:

So is it against the law to modify a DVD player and make it CODE FREE?

No, it isn't at all. Many places such as PLANET OMNI have been selling them for years. The quality of the modification rarely varies, it is generally a perfect mod so that any and all DVD movies will play but you'll need a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter to see both PAL and NTSC DVD movies.

Remember that a DVD movie is NOT a DVD-R or DVD+R disc even though it may be a movie that has been recorded.

Most DVD Codefree players will play most DVD-R & DVD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW homemade discs.

99% also play CD discs for regular music playback and many play a wide variety of other formats such as MP3, WMA, DVD-Video, Video CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, audio CD-R & CD-RW, WMA, & JPEG and JPEG and Kodak JPEG.

So, a REGION FREE DVD player can play all regions and both PAL and NTSC discs, IE every known type of DVD movie on earth, but what if you don't have a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter?

Besides the fact that you can buy those items there are also CONVERTING Region free DVD players.

Some can convert a PAL DVD movie to NTSC and some can do both that and converter a USA NTSC disc to PAL.

And some can do both but if you ever get a PAL-NTSC TV you can turn OFF the conversion and then see everything, all DVD movies from all countries in all standards on any the TV in the ORIGINAL PICTURE quality. Again, on-line shops such as Planet Omni carry this type as well.

As HD DVD is dead as a Hi-Def format we consider that blu-ray Disc players and movies on Blu-Ray discs are here to stay until the next leap into the future hits us which may happen around 2012 with the entry of the latest 6,000 Line Super-Hi Definition TVs, some 6 x more realistic and 3D appearing than Blu-Ray and 1080P technology.

As with DVD region Blu-Ray discs and players also have regions, called Region A, B and C.
These are non-compatible regions which include PAL-SECAM-NTSC and all other systems.
The beauty of a Region A or B Blu-Ray disc when played in a Multi-region Blu-Ray disc player via the HDMI output (that is a single cable combining all audio and video signals) is that the TV doesn't have to be Pal-NTSC-Secam or anything specific at all. As long as the TV has an HDMI input all Blu-Ray Disc movies from Regions A and B will play in their full glory and, depending on the maximum resolution possible of each TV, in the highest quality possible. Pal and NTSC no longer exist in the HDMI world, the problems of Hertz, government controls and so forth, Gone with the Wind!

However, there are still Regions A, B and C.

For the Hollywood production companies these 3 Regions are still important, but not as once they were.

Do know that a Blu-Ray Disc movie output thru the regular component, S-Video or composite (A/V RCA cables) still requite the proper standard to view movies with, PAL for a PAL disc and NTSC for an NTSC disc. But in TVs there are no regions so any PAL-NTSC TV can display any PAL or NTSC DVD.

Until not to long ago, ambient light was the main argument you had in choosing LCD over plasma. With today's models, though it remains a factor that helps you decide which technology to choose, it is not as decisive as it was before. The light can affect the picture quality in two ways.

First of all, if the screen material is highly reflective a lot of light will bounce from it. In a real life scenario this happens in a sunny day when a lot of sunlight enters the window and hits the screen from an angle that makes it reflect directly into your eyes. In this situation the screen acts as a mirror and instead of seeing what it is displayed on the screen you see that annoying light that reflects from it. This happens because the amount of sunlight that hits the screen and bounces from it is much higher than the amount of light the screen produces. Depending on how reflective the screen is and the angle from which the sunlight comes, this effect can be more or less disturbing. Same effect appears from other powerful light sources - like your light bulbs - but it is less disturbing. In most cases the light from light bulbs is very weak compared to sunlight so this effect is either invisible or almost unnoticeable.

The second way in which light affects the picture quality has to do with your eyes not the TV. Your eyes are built in such way that they adapt to the amount of light around. When you watch TV in a dark room, most if not all light that enters your eyes is coming from the TV. In a well lit room a lot of the light that your eyes capture is ambient light coming from the window, light bulbs or reflected by the walls and objects in the room. In this situation your eyes get more light from the environment and less from the TV itself. So when you watch TV in darkness the picture quality looks better because your eyes capture all the light from the TV and you perceive a better contrast, luminosity and saturation - which are the most important factors that affect picture quality. When you watch TV in a well lit room the ambient light will overlap with the TV light and it will make it look more washed and the colors will be less intense.

Generally Plasma TV screens are more reflective than LCD screens. At the same time, a plasma TV tends to offer better picture quality than LCD TVs in an environment with controlled lighting (a dark room). Because of these characteristics of plasma and LCD TV, they are recommended generally for different situations - plasma TVs for people who watch TV with lights turned off or dimmed and LCD TV for people who watch TV during daytime and have a lot of light in the room. Sony's Playstation 3 system got off to quite a rough start. It was released towards the end of 2006 and had two gargantuan 500 and 600 dollar price points. Many gamers scoffed at the idea of paying this when they could have the Xbox 360 for nearly half the price or the the Nintendo Wii for a mere 250 dollars. However that was in 2006; this is 2008 nearly two years after the launch of the Playstation 3. Is it worth the purchase?

The PS3 is still the most expensive system on the market, coming in at 400 dollars. However for the money you will be getting a very feature rich system that includes a varied library of games, including some AAA exclusive titles, and a system that is built to be the base of your entertainment center with its built-in blu-ray player. The online system, called the Playstation Network, is very feature rich for being a free service but has not quite caught up to the Xbox Live system that Microsoft has on the 360. However for gamers who have a little extra money to spend they will not be disappointed with everything the Playstation 3 has to offer.

First off the most important part of any system is the games that it has to offer. The Playstation 3 has many exclusives that appeal to many fans such as Metal Gear Solid 4 or the recently released LittleBigPlanet fans are sure to find something they like. My personal favorites are Uncharted, Resistance 2, and the two mentioned above. The first time players land on the tropical island in Uncharted is breathtaking. These exclusive games take true advantage of the hardware that Sony has created and it really shows. They are optimized to look and run their best on this system.

Of course the PS3 is home to many multiplatform games as well including Fallout 3, Dead Space and Soul Calibur IV. One issue that has plagued some multiplatform games on the PS3 is the shoddiness of some of the ports. Two immediate examples come to mind: The Orange Box and Fallout 3. These are two great games that are noticeably worse on the PS3 than the other platforms they are on. The Orange Box has much longer load times and Team Fortress is nearly unplayable due to lag issues. Unfortunately it does not seem likely that a patch will be released anytime soon. Fallout is not as bad but my major issue with it is that when someone on your friends list signs online the game freezes for about 4 seconds. It is terrible that this made it into the final game but luckily the game is still great.

One other issue that irks many players with the Playstation 3 is the mandatory installs for some games. It does not seem to effect exclusive titles as much (with the notable exception of Metal Gear Solid 4) however multiplatform titles that run great on the Xbox 360 require a 5GB install to before they even work on PS3. Devil May Cry 4 is the worst offender of this; taking nearly 20 minutes to install. However some games like Soul Calibur 4 have an optional install that speeds up loading times. This is a great idea and much better than mandatory installs that may be because of laziness in a port or simply because the PS3 has a slower speed drive.

A big perk for many people coming into the HDTV age is the inclusion of blu-ray in every PS3. This is a big reason why blu-ray won the format wars against HD-DVD and also is something that may push some gamers over the edge if they have trouble deciding between exclusive titles. Also since all the games are on blu-ray instead of DVD it would seem that as developers create bigger and bigger games PS3 may be the platform of choice because of all the extra benefits of blu-ray.

The Playstation Network is also a nice free bonus for every PS3 owner. Not only does it allow gamers to battle it out over the internet it also provides plenty of media to download. A perk of the PS3 is that it uses standard laptop hard drives; making it much easier and cost-efficient to upgrade the hard drive in it when compared to the Xbox 360.

Overall the PS3 is a great example of how a system can change in a matter of 2 years. Many people are down on the PS3 because of its price or they still feel like it has a lack of games. However the PS3 has a huge library of games and the exclusives on the system are what is going to make or break it for people. It may have lost quite a few of exclusives to the Xbox 360 over the past few years but it still has many break out games that fans of video games need to get their hands on.

To understand the difference between interlaced and progressive scanning, you must understand how television images are typically composed. Two fields create one frame. Each field is interlaced so that when combined together, they create a full image called a frame. In television, 30 frames are shown per second, or 60 fields per second. 1080i indicates a picture’s resolution using interlaced. This results into a high resolution image with television-like quality.

Progressive images dispense with the fields and display progressive, multiple full frames. 1080p indicates a high resolution image that appears more like film. blu-ray disc offers the higher quality 1080p video resolution. In fact, this HDTV video quality is the premier option available far surpassing any other medium or broadcast format currently on the market.

Blu-ray players and Blu-ray recorders also feature up to 54 Mbps bandwidth which is about twice that of a normal HDTV broadcast making the video quality of Blu-ray disc even more impressive. While the initial costs can be quite prohibitive, remember that your BD player will be useful for years to come, and that copying even 10 games could make up the costs of purchasing a used BD player.

As for copying the games themselves, there's one final headache in store. When copying games over to blank media, there is a special application that must be installed along with the game file, which only a few image file copying programs use, such as game copy pro and game copy wizard. This application defeats the copy protection inherently found in blu-ray discs, which has otherwise made it impossible to play backup games on the PlayStation 3 up until this point.

While the initial investment is steep, the PS3 will be around for years and years to come, as will the blu-ray format that it helped launched to stardom. Many audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts argue that DTS surround sound formats can deliver higher quality audio in comparison to their corresponding Dolby formats, with improved dynamic range, better representation of subtle detail in audio content, and improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Partly, this reasoning arises because DTS surround sound is usually encoded at a higher data rate than Dolby Digital and its lineup of associated formats.

This is more than understandable. We are dealing with lossy compression techniques. A higher bit-rate for the same format should normally implies superior sound during playback, as less compression in the encoding process should result in a better representation of the original sound source.

In this Dolby vs DTS debate, DTS people argue that they are after 'sonic perfection, not space consumption' - hence the higher bit rate and lower compression.

Dolby would counteract that their codec is more efficient and therefore, it can run at a lower bit rate.

In other words, one cannot simply draw conclusion on sound quality based on raw bit rates and compression figures alone; it also depends on how well designed are the encoding and decoding algorithms. And this makes sense too, but then...

There are relatively big differences in raw bit rates and compression levels when comparing Dolby vs DTS sound formats, implying a too wide a difference in codec efficiency - about 3 times as much - in favor of Dolby. Is it possible that Dolby sound formats achieve this level of codec efficiency?

The truth is that when dealing with different sound formats, the whole equation starts to get extremely complicated; it is not that easy to define what makes better sound.

This Dolby vs DTS is a much debated issue, but in reality is it true that one is better than the other?

To understand why this Dolby vs DTS surround sound controversy, it is necessary to have an understanding of the main differences between these formats. In particular, there are significant differences in bit-rate and compression levels as applicable to Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround. There are also important differences in the way these formats are implemented in movie house applications and in home entertainment.

Thus, while it is objectively possible to compare the resultant sound quality for the same audio format encoded at different bit rates, say in a movie house application and in home entertainment, yet it is not so straightforward when dealing with different formats.

Rather, for identically sourced audio content, it would be much easier for the listener during Dolby vs DTS 'blind' listening tests to notice a change in sound quality when changing the playback equipment between different brands, than when changing from Dolby to DTS. In other words, you need a thoroughly refined audio playback setup to bring out that subtle difference in sound quality between these two formats.

Emmerdale Farm - Visit the Emmerdale Farm Locations

Visiting the filming locations of the popular ITV night time soap opera Emmerdale is still quite an easy task.

When the filming of Emmerdale first began in the 1970s, the small Yorkshire town of Arndale in Littondale was used for the very early title sequences of the show. The show was originally conceived as being a daytime soap opera, this was soon moved to it's early evening time slot, a place it still holds today after more than 20 years.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the outdoor shots were then filmed in the town of Esholt also in West Yorkshire. Esholt was used for a very long time for shooting scenes, this in return made the town very popular with tourists, later causing a problem because with so many visitors were coming to visit Esholt, the local council were receiving complaints from residents that their town was becoming over run. After discussions and plans being submitted for extra car parks and facilities, it was decided by the council that this was not a good plan.

The early 1990s saw the whole format of Emmerdale Farm change, Farm was dropped from the title and an exclusive purpose built outdoor set was built on the outskirts of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, on the estate of Harewood House. Fans today still visit the areas of Arndale and Esholt as this is the original home of the still popular ITV show. Halo 3 Skull Locations

IRON- The first halo 3 skull location I will tell you about is...the Iron skull, it is on the level Sierra 117. At the end of the level when you have to jump on the pelican, don't. Instead get right behind the pelican. Now turn left and you will see a ledge you can jump on. Jump on it then follow it and eventually you will reach the Iron Skull. Want to see the exact halo 3 skull location? Please look at the bottom of the page and you will see videos.

BLACK EYE- The black eye skull is on CROWS NEST. If you look up at the very beginning of the level you will see a large pipe. The skull is on top of the pipe. To get on this pipe act as if you were going to exit the room. You will then see in the middle of the room a rectangular board looking thing. Jump on top of this and then jump on a small pipe. You will then be able to jump on the pipe containing the skull. Once you get on the pipe the skull is yours. Just go down towards the end of the big pipe.

TOUGH LUCK- The skull is on the level Tsavo Highway. It is extremely hard to tell the exact location, so please look to the bottom at the links.

CATCH- The catch skull is quite hard to get. It involves grenade jumping. On the level the storm, when you have to kill the anti air wraiths DON'T!!!!!!!!! IF you do you will make the skull go away. Well in the field the anti air wraith is there is a pillar. the skull is on top of the pillar. Video is at the bottom of the page.

FOG- The FOG skull is on the level the FLOODGATE. In the beginning right before you enter the city you will hear a marine shout "what is that?" Then you must shoot the flood that has the skull as it jumps across the roof.

FAMINE- Is on the level ark and the level ark is just to big to give a detailed location so please look to the bottom.It is helpful to have a vehicle.

THUNDERSTORM- On the level covenant when you are in a hornet. Go to the second reactor and on the thing that going over the reactor is where the skull is. Again if a bit confused look at the videos to the right.

MYTHIC- Is on the last level at the beginning. When you turn into the first cave follow it until you see another cave to the right, follow that until you see the skull.

TILT-Is on the cortana level. In the room where she mentions she like to play games there is something that looks like a mushroom. Jump on the mushroom then jump up on the thing that is connected to the mushroom. Next jump to another mushroom looking thing and the skull will be near there.

GRUNT BIRTHDAY PARTY- On the level crowsnest. In the room where there are pipes and drones come out there is a drop at the end. DON'T drop down. Instead there is a ledge, slowly go over the edge and drop on the ledge. The skull will be there. This is the funnest skull to use in Halo 3.

BLIND- It is on the level Sierra 117. It is close to the beginning. It is where you have your first real battle and there is a water fall. Go to the right of the waterfall and the blind skull will be on a rocky cliff.

COWBELL-It is on the level the ARK. When you fight the scarab there is a little house looking thing in the middle of the desert near the scarab. In it there is some gravity lift. Get one, after you beat the scarab continue the level. Then when you get into the building your suppose too you will find a room. In the room there will be things that look like bee hive holes. Use a gravity lift to boost yourself up. Please look at the video if you don't understand.

IWHBYD-This is probably the most difficult skull to find and get. It is on the level the covenant. Where you kill the the prophet there should be rings. DON'T jump through any because it will cause it to mess up. First you must make sure everything is dead such as the flood. Afterward, the rings are numbered. 1 is the beginning ring and 7 is the end. Now, once everything is dead, jump through the rings in this order "4,6,5,4,5,3" After you do this all the rings should start to blink. If this happens the skull has appeared near where you killed the prophet. There are a few ring combinations to get this skull so if the one i listed above doesn't work out look at the video. This is the hardest skull to get in Halo 3.

Paramount and Warner Support Blu-ray Over HD DVD

Sony, the loser of the first media format war (VHS vs. Betamax) and the maker of blu-ray, is making great strides in the next battle against HD DVD.

This past week, Warner announced that the studio would release its films exclusively in blu-ray beginning in June. Today, Paramount has decided to drop its support for HD DVD as well. Both studios now join Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, and MGM as exclusive backers of the Sony format. Universal Pictures remains the sole major studio in support of HD DVD.

The recent moves to blu-ray are a sign that the studios no longer wish to partake in the format war. Robin Harris of ZDNet wrote on his blog that "DVD sales have weakened and Hollywood suspects the HD format war is part of the problem." While competition is always good for consumers, the high price tags and the uncertain future of the two competing formats have definitely been limiting their growth potential.

With generous mark-downs during the holiday shopping seasons, HD DVD and Blu-ray players still cost over $200 per unit, compared to the progressive scan DVD player at $50 or less. It's understandable that shoppers may not wish to risk hundreds of dollars on a potentially dead format, especially after they have just invested in an expensive HDTV. On the flip side, consumers might be holding off on buying soon-to-be outdated traditional DVDs in anticipation of the new format. Recently flourishing mail/web video rental market (Netflix and Blockbuster) has also contributed to the decrease in traditional DVD sales, after years of double-digit growth.

Another speculation is that Apple could soon be offering Blu-ray drives as an upgrade option for its MacBooks. On January 6th, Panasonic introduced thin Blu-ray drive for laptops. Since Apple is on the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association and Panasonic is a major manufacturer for all MacBook drives, the probability of Apple unveiling Blu-ray capable MacBooks at the next MacWorld is high.

What does this mean for consumers? Focusing on a single format will help manufacturers lower production costs and help retail stores save floor space and concentrate their marketing efforts. With analog broadcasting coming to an end, a single format would help consumers adopt digital TV and the next-gen format. If Blu-ray does win out, however, it will be a real downer for those who put down the money for a XBox 360 HD DVD add-on. But hey, no one wants to see Sony lose two media format wars in a row, right?

Will Blu Ray Play HD Discs ?

blu-ray and HD DVD are competing disc storage formats looking to replace the standard DVD format. In effect, they look to supersede the standard DVD in terms of storage capacity. Although there is always a need to improve on an existing system, these two formats have received much attention because of the imminent appearance of high definition movies, video and television. Notably, high definition movies need more storage space and this is why a search for the next generation of DVD is occurring.

Blu ray and HD DVD are fighting it out to replace the standard DVD. Much research and development has gone into creating each format and various industry giants are adopting one or the other to put into their products.

Sony and Panasonic are two big consumer electronics companies that are going with blu-ray. All their products will use the blu-ray technology.

Toshiba and NEC are supporting HD DVD and all their products will use HD DVD technology.

In terms of game consoles, the Sony Playstation 3 will use blu-ray and the Xbox from Microsoft will use HD DVD.

All these products will have backwards compatibility whereby they will be able to player the standard DVD's. However, they will not play the competitors format of disc storage. Thus blu-ray will not be able to play HD disks and vice versa.

The truth is that many big companies have so much money invested in their products, that they would want to see the opposition fail, so the last thing they will be doing is making them compatible.

Having said this, Pioneer and LG made an announcement that they would be producing a dual blu-ray/HD DVD player. This will no doubt feature two individual readers, one for blu-ray and one for HD DVD. NEC have also recently announced that they are creating a chip that can be used as the processor behind a universal player that will be able to play both blu-ray and HD DVD's. So things are happening, but you may have to wait a few years before you see products on the shelves and they might be expensive to begin with.

The games are on a small disk known as a UMD that can be carried around easily. There are also memory sticks that you can use to store games on. So, how do you download games onto your PSP from your computer?

Here is your guide:

When programmers design games specifically for the PSP, they are sometimes referred to as Homebrew Games. Some of these Homebrew Games are made for the PSP game console to mimic games made for other systems so you do not have to have every console made in order to play every game.

For example, a game that was made for Nintendo may be Homebrewed to play with your PSP console so you can have the fun of the Nintendo, but not the expense. This is just one of the many selling points for the PSP because you can download Homebrew PSP games from just about anywhere you look online.

To download a game on to PSP from the Internet, you will need a PSP memory stick with sufficient memory. It is advisable that the stick have at least 1GB of memory to accommodate graphic, sound and any personal settings. However, these cards can get expensive, so if you do not have one or do not have the money to buy one, a 256 MB stick will most likely work. If your stick is brand new, it will have to be formatted before downloading.

An important note: you will need your PSP Firmware version 1.5 or less. If you have a newer PSP you may have to downgrade.

It is quite simple to download games for PSP from the Internet to your PC , then move the files from your computer to the PSP itself. When you hook up the PSP to the PC via a USB cable, the PC will recognize it as a removable memory device. I am going to give you my quick and easy recipe for putting your favorite music on your PSP. There are only a few steps and it is a cinch on you know how.

1. First off you need to get what they call a cd ripper and while you are at it I would definitely grab a psp video converter. A cd ripper lets you pull music (rip) of your cd's
that you have now. The psp video converter will let you rip and convert video files to watch on your PSP...so you can watch and listen to music videos and music, cool heh!

2. Load your cd and fire up your cd ripper select the song or songs you want to put on your PSP and hit the "extract and encode" to PSP.

3. If you already have music files on your pc then all you need to do is hit "add" from your cd ripper or psp video converter.

Who's been creeping in My Wireless Network

Wireless router networks are a wonderful thing for easy of access and the pleasure of sitting anywhere in my home with my laptop and surfing the internet. But the question is, who else is surfing the internet via your wireless!!! I have had multiple user's,friends and family members go out to the area superstore, buy a wireless router, get home plug it in and wow it's running and I'm done. At this point you are far from done!!! You need to change the "factory default" password that lets you modify that router. Right now your little wireless router is beaming out to anyone that will listen, that "My network" is open and ready for anyone to use...and I do mean anyone!!!

If your lucky (haha) it's only the neighbors that are picking up your signal and allowing them to connect and surf through your broadband (you know, the DSLCable your paying all that money for..). From there it gets worse if you have some guy (or gal) driving by your neighborhood looking for open wireless routers. Lets pretend that we're that bad guy (or gal) and see how they do harm. Lets see, got my laptop set looking for available wireless networks...yep, found one... ok now lets see if the owner didn't change the factory default password. So he goes to Internet Explorer and types in the address bar 192.168.1.1 (which is usually the factory for wireless routers) and now he's prompted to enter a username and password. He knows that if this is still factory still that all he has to do is type "admin" in the password area and .....yep...he's in your router!! He now has access to your computer!!!! Don't Let This happen to You..... read the instructions that come with the router (yes I know this is hard for us guys to do) and it will show you the basics for protecting your router,and computer. Disney Influences Adoption of New Technology

There has been a lot of bad news lately for the HD DVD high def DVD format in its war with the rival blu-ray format. For example, sales of blu-ray discs have doubled the sales of HD DVD since the beginning of the year. This has even been true for a number of titles that were published in both formats and that the HD DVD format was relying on in order to promote special features that is provides and that Blu-ray doesn't provide.

Both of these formats have a lot in common. Both are able to store much more data than conventional DVD's on discs that are about the same size. All of that data can then be used to store an entire full length movie in the highest available HDTV resolution on a single disc. The bonus features that come with the movies can also be stored on the disc. The Blu-ray format actually has a much larger storage capacity, by as much as twenty gigabytes per disc, but HD DVD has much more extensive interactive features.

A major practical difference between the two formats is price. While the discs themselves cost about the same amount, HD DVD players have typically cost about half what Blu-ray players cost given the same features. This makes the apparent success of the Blu-ray format even more surprising.

These two incompatible formats have been trying to gain an edge on each other for quite a while, and there are a number of explanations for why Sony's Blu-ray format has done better than Toshiba's HD DVD format. For one thing, there are more movie studios publishing their titles exclusively on Blu-ray than there are studios that completely rely on HD DVD. So far Universal is the only studio that only publishes on HD DVD, while a variety of studios publish their titles in both formats, and several rely exclusively on Blu-ray. As a result, there are a lot more titles available on Blu-ray, which probably accounts for its lead in sales.

Another marketing strategy that seems to have paid off was to include a Blu-ray drive in the newest version of Sony's Play Station video game platform. In fact, key timing of the release of Disney movie titles in the past was instrumental in the win of VHS in the video cassette format war of the nineteen eighties and in the adoption of DVD technology in the nineties. So there is a good chance that Disney's "Blu-ray Title Wave" could contribute to a decisive success on the part of Blu-ray in the next year or so.

My BD-P1400 arrived late yesterday! The firmware was updated last night via internet download and burning a CD. First impressions:

FYI: There is no image or sound quality difference, or any other type of difference, in the USA Region A version of the multi-region Region A and B version of the Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player.

I have tried a regular DVD and one BRD so far and am very pleased. Load
times are very acceptable. No negatives from me on this unit so far. Will
report more later when I get some of the more seemingly problematic BRDs.

The BD-P1400 has classic Samsung style. The front of the unit is all glossy black, with a thin strip of silver along the bottom.

Got my Samsung BD-P1400 last night and boy was I excited!! Before this review, let me start by saying that this is the first and only Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player that I have owned and that I may not make some of the comparisons you are looking for. If I don't, just lemme know! I also want to say that I have NOT upgraded to the latest firmware yet as my modem is not near a TV.

Design: Wonderful looking BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player , the best yet I think. Face is very open, not cluttered, and the piano gloss finish rocks. Good remote too.
Load Times Wonderful. I have 5 movies so far and they all loaded in approx. 15 seconds. Then there was the new F4 Silver Surfer.... This is a BD+ title from Fox and many have had complaints about its load time. The BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player gave me no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible. Let me say again that this is right out of the box, no firmware update yet!

I have not played with the sound much as I don't have my Onkyo TX-SR705 yet. I did notice that there is an option to set the speakers from small to large in analog 5.1 out mode. There are other discussions and reports of people getting full DTS-MA bitstream from this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player (after firmware upgrade) on other threads and forums. I'm getting very anxious to try this out!

Others

The rest of the stuff is pretty standard. 128x max forward, unit resumes same position in the movie even after powered off, pretty good response times from remote keys, etc.

All in all, this is a dynamite BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. With the firmware upgrade, this guy will do just about anything that you can expect from a blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player right now!!

In addition to Blu-ray discs, the Samsung BD-P1400 can play standard-definition DVDs and CDs.

The BD-PBD-P1400's high-resolution soundtrack support is excellent. It has onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD High Resolution, which means it can output these soundtracks either in PCM format over the HDMI output or via the analog outputs. For newer receivers, the BD-P1400 also offers bitstream output for high-resolution soundtracks. So if you have a newer receiver with onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, you can set the BD-P1400 to output audio over HDMI in encoded bitstream format--letting your receiver do the decoding, rather than the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player.

There should be absolutely no sound quality difference whether you let the receiver decode or the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player decode, but some AV fans just love seeing the "Dolby TrueHD" light on their new receiver. If you need a Code free Converting DVD Disc Player for $79.95 Planet Omni also has that and they come with 2 warranties. So far, I am really happy with this purchase. I was not sure I made the right deal because of the negative reviews I read but bought it anyway.

I really don't know why people get upset when it only takes two minutes to get ready to play. I have used it several times with Blu-Ray disks rented from Netflix with no problems. I am still waiting for the eight free movies.

Connectivity is also solid. There's an HDMI output capable of carrying both 1080p video signals and high-resolution audio.

For high-def analog video, there's a component video output (limited to 1080i), and there's an S-Video output and a composite output for standard-def output. (As with all DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player s, there is no DVD upscaling available via component video). On the audio side, there's the aforementioned HDMI output, along with 5.1-channel analog outputs, both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, and stereo analog outputs.

Rounding out the connectivity is an Ethernet port, which enables you to upgrade the firmware from the Internet--a feature that's been common to HD DVD Players, but very rare among Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Players.

The BD-P1400 did a good job of rendering the opening sequence of Star Trek: Insurrection, demonstrating its 2:3 pull-down prowess. Next up was Seabiscuit, and the BD-P1400 did a solid job with the difficult introduction, with few to no jaggies on the black and white photos.

Just a quick update on the Samy BD-P1400. I have rented some BR's from Netflix and have really been enjoying the BD-P1400 - how about you? All the techno mumbo jumbo aside, as far as I'm concerned this is a great BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player.

I hope that the head dudes in charge of this forum will make a sticky for the Samsung BD-P1400 - hint - hint! watching home movies here...not saving lives.

The Samsung is a REALLY good unit for the price. The multi-region version is just $849.95 from Planet Omni and considering they use a double motherboard specially imported which must cost a fortune plus the intensive labor it's a real great bargain, IMHO.

I was able to plug my unit directly into my modem with a network cable (as per Samsungs directions in the user manual) and the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player found it's new firmware and loaded it up without the need for me to get on the computer, burn disks...etc. Very cool.

The Samsung has a great image and with the current update I can listen to DTS-HD Master Audio (Sony can't say that for twice the price!).

With the pace at which the technology is moving I think it is very difficult for a manufacturer to manufacture these units, get them to market and have them totally "current" with the new disk technology, (which is changing daily), but Samsung has provided me with a unit that I can just plug into my modem and get an update when they have it available. I think that is AMAZING.

A little patience and understanding can go a long way. After all...it wasn't that long ago that when you bought an electronic component, you couldn't update it at all. I am sure Samsung will come thru with an update soon. I have not run into any disks I could not play as of yet.

Having never seen a 1200 in action, I can't help you - but the BD-P1400 PQ is excellent, but that's what Blu is all about - right?

I have tried several BD's from Netflix as well as a few standard def DVD's. All were great. As far as the handshake issue, I'm not really sure what that is.... and for the off, then play thing... why would you want to do that in a movie anyways?

Great BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player, I couldn't be more happy I got the new BD-P1400 last week. returned the 1200 to get it. (plus 100 price difference in my favor. PROS= the pic quality is by far the best I've seen, even better then the panny I had.

Controls are easy and setup just the same. I don't like it loses the signal at the beginning of the discs.
AUDIO= I am not able to use all the audio features due to my ONKYO being a few years old. I have it setup with a digital optical cable, the sound is really excellent except for the POPS I get every now and then.

As for the BD discs, POTC about 2 minutes, have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, with any other BD movies. I did notice that after I hit pause and went to hit play, the movie would play for a minute and then stop. I had to hit play again. No big deal.

Used the Ethernet port to download new firmware, can't tell the difference though. I am sorry I am not that technical but this is my blue collar review. any??????s I will answer the best I can

Just finished watching Casino Royale - spectacular!

I have a Playstation 3 that has awesome picture quality for both Blu-Ray and upscaling of Standard DVD's since a software upgrade. We use this for our main HD TV in the family room. I needed another BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player for a second HD TV we just had hung in our bedroom.

I waited for the BD-P1400 to become available since I already committed to the Blu-Ray format and wanted the latest technology available. I cannot say enough about the sound quality that this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player offers, it is unbelievable. The picture quality is excellent and on par with the Playstation 3. I am seriously considering purchasing a second BD-P1400 for our main set because of the outstanding sound. Great BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player especially for the money.

By far the best Blu-ray I ever tested. Never watch cartoons but now I'm spending a lot of time watching with my kids.

This is a great Blue Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. DTS HD MA bitstream finally. I have owned this product for about two months and am thrilled with it; it is really a good deal. I only use my Blu Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player to play Blu Ray movies, since the sound is piped into a Samsung 5-disc receiver. The picture quality is amazing. I own four Blu Ray discs (which I purchased on Amazon at $14.99 each) and they all play beautifully, with no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, and a crystal clear picture.

I bought this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player in December. I hooked it up with an HDMI cable to a Sony Receiver. The Cable Box from Comcast is also hooked up to the receiver. The receiver is connected to a 42 inch Panasonic 1080P Plasma. Three HDMI cables, that is it.

It has worked flawlessly from the beginning with every Blu-Ray disc we have tried. We get about one a week from Netflix. I can play Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Not sure why the other reviewer could not.

The picture quality is stunning with Planet Earth. I guess I can credit the Panasonic TV mostly for that.

I did the version 1.2 firmware upgrade in December. I just did the version 1.5 firmware upgrade yesterday Feb 5th. I downloaded both and created the ISO CD.

To me it works fast. So you have to wait a few seconds for it to boot up, so what? Go get the DVD while you are waiting.

Most computers nowadays take minutes to boot. I imagine it will never get better, likely probably worse over time since these are in essence computers, and the more technology advances the slower these machines are to turn on and load up.

After doing the firmware upgrade, I checked my settings and noticed they had been reset. If you have a digital receiver, you should make sure that the audio is set to 'bit rate' and not PCM if you want surround sound.

I also had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, playing regular DVDs or CDs either. So when it becomes obsolete, it will replace my other DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player and improve the quality of the regular DVDs with my other older 720P Samsung set.

I don't think anyone should delay buying because of the format war. The minute you buy anything nowadays, it becomes obsolete and is eventually a throw away. So you at least enjoy it while you can, life is too short. At the prices today what the heck, it is cheap, buy now before the dollar becomes worthless! You can get an entire home theatre 1080P HDMI based system with speakers for less than $[...] right now. Thank you China! I got my HDMI cables from Planet Omni, $19.95 for 2 meter length, superb images and sound!

Before I hooked this up, I updated the firmware via the Ethernet port. Once that was done I have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, with the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player at all. I debated whether or not to buy this due to some negative reviews, but the deal was just too good to pass up for a stand alone. Those of you that have had problems with this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player have every right to complain about them here, that's what these reviews are for.

However, the people complaining it isn't 1.1 or 2.0 (no BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is 2.0 yet) should stop. Nowhere in the description does it say this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is supposed to be 1.1. If you want to inform people there are updates coming and this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player will not be able to benefit, go ahead, but to say it is horrible and obsolete because of it being 1.0 is misleading. I have a feeling most people want to just watch the movie and would rarely use the features of 1.1 (like picture in picture commentary).

If that's you, this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is perfect. If you need a 1.1 BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player, get the panasonic. For me this one will work fine for the next couple of years while Blu-ray gets its act together and finalizes an emerging product. I hope those of you that have had problems were able to get them resolved and can now enjoy the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player as I do.

I have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible with the Samsung BD-PBD-P1400. I just plugged it in, connected it to the internet and started the firmware upgrade utility. After about 20 minutes, the firmware upgrade was successful and I played my first movie without a glitch. Every movie I've played since has also played flawlessly. You can also upgrade the firmware by burning a CD or if you don't have internet, Samsung will send it to you.

This product works just fine on blu-ray disks, also on non-European format DVDs, and on music CD-ROMs. I have found no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible with it. It even does a superior job of showing plain DVDs on my 40" TV, where my previous DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player only would take up part of the screen.

One clever and undocumented touch is that it seeks out the right TV input choice once a disk is inserted. It may help that the TV is also a Samsung.
I got this on Nov.30, 2007, and unlike what other reviewers have said, the BD-P1400 does start back where you stopped. Everything else looks and works great.

I'm editing this review on March 13, 2008, to reflect my experience with the machine. It appears to me that whether a DVD will start back where it stopped depends on how the DVD was manufactured, NOT on the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player . Some DVDs, such as "LOST, Season 3", don't even have chapter/scene makers on them, much less the ability to restart after a stop.

Some DVDs, such as "3:10 to Yuma", actually have their own system for marking where you stop or where you may want to go back to, but otherwise require a restart from scratch. But some DVDs do restart where stopped.

My chief complaint with Blu-Ray (not necessarily with this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player in particular) is that it takes FOREVER for a DVD to start up, then if you do have a DVD that won't restart from where it stopped, you have to go through the painfully long start-up again.

I've learned to NEVER PAUSE a DVD, which causes it to shut down the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player after a few minutes. Instead, I keep it going at 1/8 speed, then when I come back, I can easily back up to where I was -- a lot faster than a restart.

If there is a better BR BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player anywhere near this price range, I haven't heard of it. Now that HD DVD has died, I hope that DVD makers will focus their attention on making BR DVDs work more easily and FASTER.

This is a great player. The only issue is the firmware upgrade. I used CD-R/RW burning method...easiest and fastest. Burn *.iso image using nero burning rom software. The instructions are in [...]/support. I have both HD-DVD and blu-ray. so far blu-ray is better. HD looks like upconverted DVD. Read the instructions carefully i.e. the new Blu-ray "Live Free Die Hard" contains a note letting you know the software upgrade may be needed.

Lastly, remember this is HDMI 1.3 compatible...so in order to use 1.3 capabilities, you need a cable and TV which is HDMI 1.3 compatible also....the picture is great. Buy this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player and upgrade the software right away.

I have read and continue to see many complaints about different blu-ray and hd-dvd BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player s not working like people hoped. I can say that with this model I have had absolutely zero issues.

I am sure some people will write that it doesn't load this or doesn't do that, but it hasn't affected me. I have not found a single disc that has not played perfectly. What people have to remember is that in this day and age everything is like a computer, you may have to update, it is part of life now, get over it.

Will the manufacturers eventually get this flawless, probably so but in the mean time I will be enjoying my movies now. If you are an early adopter like I am on technology then any issues you might run into will be no big deal. The BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is easy to setup, easy to play and loads reasonably fast. Glad I bought it and already thinking about a second one for different room.

Complete satisfaction with this product. Greatly enhances my regular dvd's. I was really surprised about this claim, but the Samsung does as advertised. The blu-ray disc audio is very good. Can't wait until hooking this up with my new surround system.

I also read a dedicated AV Science forum online concerning this model BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. First, all of the information and customer reviews highlight the endemic problem that implementation of newer Blu-Ray standards is occurring gradually. Moreover, features are evolving, meaning that we are all taking some chances when we purchase any Blu-Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player (that is not a PS3).

I personally have no interest whatsoever in owning a game console. Second, many of these reviews describe in conscientious detail the kinds of problems that people are having, as well as whether and how the problems have been overcome. This review adds data to that second category - practical problems.

When my BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player arrived the very first thing I did was install the latest firmware downloaded from the Samsung web site. I suggest the method that uses a cd rather than a direct network connection; in either case the manuals and web site offer complete directions. Be sure to *confirm that the update was successful* by restarting the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player , re-inserting the firmware cd, and comparing the disk version to the installed version.

What problems have I had? In a month of watching Netflix discs I have had not one single hiccup, not a single blue screen, no refusals to play any of the BDs or SD-DVDs that others have had problems with - I have had *nothing but perfect performance*! True, some of the other criticisms like slower controls are inherent to the technology. But my BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player has been flawless and my expectations have been significantly exceeded. Without hesitation, I give my BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player five stars.

Pros: My favorite feature, by far, is the 24 frame per second output mode. Movies display exactly as they were intended - be that good or bad - and 'judder' in slowly-panned scenes is significantly improved compared to 30 FPS. This alone, in my opinion, warrants the relatively modest price tag. [In direct comparisons using my 50" plasma TV, the video quality of movies from the BD-P1400 at 24 FPS is clearly superior to the same discs when played through advanced computer video cards that cost the same!] I also like the features and layout of the remote control, which doubles up to control my Samsung TV. Yes, these are basic features within the realm of Blu-Ray, but they have been very capably implemented.

Cons: My only nit-pick is that I would like a set-up feature that allowed the audio and video outputs to be delayed relative to each other by a selectable increment. This would allow perfect lip-sync when using older (i.e. slower) audio decoders/receivers that are not HDMI 1.3 compliant. However, to my knowledge this feature is not offered on *any* new Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player , since the HDMI 1.3 standard incorporates an automatic synchronization feature if all the components are HDMI 1.3 compatible.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I have not had a single 'playability' issue using the latest build of the latest firmware. Based on this - 5 stars.

Let's hope that Samsung will support this model well into the future by further optimizing the operating firmware, as needed.
In brief: Outstanding picture quality---my wife and I say, even for stills, "Polaroid picture!", breathtaking.

The unit has all the requisite connections. I play it through a Yamaha av-tuner with 7.1 channels, via HDMI, but other connections are available.

There is a simple blue-ringed on-off button, and a tray open-close button; that's it on on-board controls. The remote has several levels of sophistication: It is easy to find and use the power, pause-play-rewind-fast/slow controls, those you will use 99% of the time. The remote also provides movie menu controls (e.g., language), player menu controls, and options for controlling other devices---learn to use them only if/when you need them. There was absolutely no setting up to do---plug and play! Great neuro-ergonomics, i.e., intuitive ease of use.

In over three weeks of regular usage, we have noted some glitches, but it's not clear if it is the player itself or the emerging technology. Several times, the unit went into "Stop" mode as if the button had been pushed; I had to hit "Play" to get the movie started again. Mildly distracting.

What would I also like? Perhaps controls for the av amplifier as well, although that unit has all the buttons needed for TV, player, and amp. Maybe better backlighting on all buttons. This is one heck of a deal, recommended to anyone wanting to get into blu-ray.

the Samsung 1400 is significantly superior to the Toshiba HD-A3. The BD-P1400 supports not only TrueHD, but DTS-HD MA bitstream output over HDMI. The A3 can only extract the DTS 'core' and cannot send bitstream DTS-HD MA out. Only the HD-A35 and the XA2 can do that, but both are significantly costlier than this player. The BD-P1400 can also output full 1080p/24 video, while the A3 can only send out 1080i and does not support 24fps output.

Both are slow to load up, but the A3 is significantly slower, taking almost 2 full minutes to warm up the player and display video on your monitor/screen. The PS3 takes less than 30 seconds btw. The A3 is also very noisy, distractingly so especially because it is a high pitched noise that is hard to ignore.

Overall, the BD-P1400 is a high functioning blu-ray stand alone player, that supports lossless audio output (PCM, TrueHD, and DTS-HD MA) and 1080p/24. I would still recommend a four hundred dollar PS3 over the BD-P1400, but if you really want a standalone player, you can't go wrong with the BD-P1400.

It did NOT disappoint in the slightest. I have not had any problems playing any DVD Blu-ray or not. I have not had to download any firm-ware to solve ANY issues. The BD-P1400 worked straight out of the box. The only thing that comes close to a con is that it's slow on start-up and loading.

I am very satisfied with this player and I'm happy. All I can report is that mine works perfectly so far, and I have recommended it to many of my friends when asked for an opinion.

This Blu-Ray player is first-class. Easy setup. This is my first Hi-Def player, and I am very happy with my purchase. I did the latest firmware update per the instructions in the manual, and it has functioned flawlessly. The player has a modern, slick, glossy appearance. The sounds are incredible, and the images are too beautiful to be described. Very easy to install and use. I never knew the difference that a Blu-ray player can make in the movie watching experience. I am not an expert, just a regular mom that purchased the blu-ray player for family viewing.

Not a single problem. I even have it in a tight spot with 2" clearance above top and open back with No overheating problems. None of my movies have locked up or have been unable to play. I have tried Live Free or Die Hard, all the Harry Potters, Planet Earth and others. Firmware 1.5 arrived on Jan 24th and it has seemed to fix all the problems others were having. I would definitely recommend this player to others.

I have a PS3 and a Sony 300 S Blu-ray player, and they are both excellent blu-ray players. However, I love my new Samsung 1400 BD it can decode DTS HD sound, and it makes for a wonderful movie watching experience. The first thing a new owner should do is go to samusung.com and download the latest firmware update (it is a fast simple process). There are also instructions on the owner's manual that explains how to update the player. I have watched the latest Blu-ray releases from Fox, Disney, Sony, etc. and the picture/sound quality is outstanding. Very pleased with the product.

Things You Should Know About High Def TVs

Any new technology has at least a little learning curve to it, but high def TVs seem to have a really big one, for good reason. Instead of just one technology, high def TVs are an amalgam of a dozen or so: plasma TVs, LCD TVs, DLP TVs, blu-ray disk technology, new cable and satellite broadcast technology, cabling technology - the list goes on. Worse, for the nontechnophile, there is no easy way to understand what's going on. The interaction of all these different technologies can lead to problems even for the specialist installers.

There are a few things you should know, though, that will help you head trouble off before it impacts you.

1. Do the HD math before you buy your set. Not all plasma TVs have HD capacity. You want to get a set that adheres to one of the two broadcast standards: 1280x720 (720p) and 1920x1080 (1080i or 1080p). Why? If you don't have a television that brings in at least the lower of these resolutions, you won't be receiving the full band capacity being sent to your set, resulting in either resolution issues or no picture.

2. Just because you bought an HD-capable set does not mean you'll be able to bring in your cable company's HD signal! Broadcast standards coming up only require digital - DTV - capable sets, and those that claim to be capable of HD may still need an adapter. An "HD ready" television is capable of showing HD, but does not necessarily have an HD tuner, which you need to translate the signal; worse, older sets advertised as HD ready may not display your full HD resolution. "Full HD" only means that the set is 1080p or better, not that it has a tuner. Lesson here: make sure your TV has the HD tuner.

3. Don't think you have to use the expensive HDMI cables just because the guy in the store says you do. The advantages of HDMI cable are improved shielding and an all-in-one video and audio capacity. Standard DVI-D cables, provided they are short and new, do just as well in most cases and are significantly cheaper. However, they should be either new or guaranteed free of shorts and dirt. Any interference in a standard television will just cause degradation of signal; for a high-def TV, you lose your picture entirely.

4. You can use your high-def TV to record HD signals to DVDs and even VHS, but you won't have a lot of capacity. blu-ray recordings or recordings to a computer or separate hard drive are your best bet.

5. If your image carries "artifacts" such as a wavy background or "swarms" around images, it's not your set, it's your HD provider. You can't do much about it except whine to them and hope they open up more HD channels to carry their crowded signals - not likely. One option is to purchase a device like the Algolith Mosquito HDMI to clean up your signal - but it's more expensive than most plasma TVs, at about three thousand bucks. Your other option is to wait a couple of years for the problem to resolve itself as cable and digital technology improve, or change your provider.

6. Read your high-def TV's manual. Whether you have a plasma TV or an LCD TV, the manual will give you information that you desperately need, whether you know it or not. Don't expect to operate your television out of the box. Instead, schedule yourself some "me and the TV" time so you'll have time to get to know the different options before they become problems.

Blu Ray VS HD DVD - Who Will Win The Format War ?

blu-ray and HD DVD (High Definition DVD) are two conflicting storage technologies for digital media like high definition movies, games and other audio visual material. There are a few other technologies emerging but it seems that these two rivals are the big players in the battle for home consumers hearts and minds. So what are they, which one is better and who is likely to win the latest technology format war.

blu-ray was created by the Blu ray Disc Association, an association of major consumer electronics producers, like Sony and Panasonic, as a high capacity storage device to replace the standard DVD format. HD DVD was developed by the DVD forum, an alternative association of high tech electronics producers, including Toshiba and NEC, as their replacement of standard DVD.

Both work on the same principle. They use a blue laser with a shorter wavelength than the standard red laser of Dvd's and CD's (405 nm compared to 650 nm). This allows for more storage space on a disc. More storage is vital as high definition video becomes an industry standard in movies, TV and video games.

Latest information on the storage capacities of each format sees blu-ray out in front. A single layer blu-ray disc can store 25 GB compared to HD DVD of 15GB. A dual layer blu-ray can store 50 GB while the HD DVD stores 30 GB. This would suggest that blu-ray can store more detail and thus provide better extra features to movies etc. Although this is not completely true as video compression influences the amount of information stored on a disc, the capacity is a significant difference between the two formats.

Initial blu-ray discs stored data close to the surface of the disk. This meant that if the disc was scratched in any way it would probably malfunction or jam when playing. Apparently a protective layer has now been introduced to newer blu-ray disc that protects the data much more. HD DVD have always stored the data deeper in the disc and are resistant to most minor scratching and wear and tear.

Although the underlying technology is important in a format war, it is more often the case of the people supporting each format that has more influence on the outcome.

Again, it seems like blu-ray has the advantage.

Blu-ray is supported by consumer electronics companies Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Sharp and Pioneer and a number of others. This suggests that they will produce products that are exclusively devoted to using the blu-ray technology. The most recent instance of this is the Sony Playstation 3 that features a blu-ray disc player.

In terms of computer technology companies, blu-ray is supported by Apple, Dell, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard. Their disk drives will use blu-ray.

Possibly more significant for people interested in home entertainment are the major movie companies supporting blu-ray. These are 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Although Walt Disney and Warner Bros. are not supporting them exclusively and will produce movies in HD DVD format. At this point only Universal Pictures has an exclusive deal to produce HD DVD pictures.

On the HD DVD side possibly the biggest player is Microsoft. They have HD DVD readers in the X box games console and seem determined to throw their weight behind HD DVD.

Of the major consumer electronics companies, the most significant supporters of HD DVD are Toshiba, NEC and Kenwood.

In terms of computer component manufacturers, Intel is behind HD DVD.

Although it is still unclear who is winning the format war, it would seem that blu ray has some big supporters. Although HD DVD have some big names too, notably Microsoft. Prices of individual players and recording devices might also impact the success of each format. At this point most products are quite expensive but this will change with time.

The discrepancies between the two are confusing many home theater buyers, so it’s important to know just what each of these new technologies has to offer so that you can make an informed decision on what to purchase and when.

Let’s start by discussing just what blu-ray is. Chances are, if you’ve stepped into any of the leading home theater and electronics stores in the country, you’ve seen Blu-ray discs advertised in the DVD section. In truth, Blu-ray discs are somewhat like traditional DVDs, except that they have the ability to record, rewrite, and playback high definition (HD) video that is compatible with the growing number of HD televisions finding their way into home theaters every year. Unlike traditional DVDs, Blu-ray discs can hold nearly five times as much data. On a single layer disc, they can hold 25GB of data, and 50GB can be stored on a dual layer disc. High definition technology is certainly the wave of the future for home entertainment, and HD-DVD was the first disc technology formatted for it.

Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs use a new form of laser that improves on what the standard DVD used. While older, standard DVD models used a red laser to transfer content from disc to player to screen, these two technologies use a blue-violet laser instead. The main benefit with using blue-violet lasers is that they have a shorter wavelength than red lasers. This means that they can be focused with a much higher rate of accuracy.

As you can see the differences between these two formats are very few, In short, Blu-ray is able to hold more information than HD-DVD, but HD-DVD has been around for much longer and still holds an adequate amount for any applications currently in the market. Both formats use blue-violet lasers to better read the information.

The biggest question right now is which format will end up on top. Blu-ray has the added advantage of being backed up by some major players in the movie business. Seven of the eight major Hollywood movie studios have released films in Blu-ray format recently, while five of them are releasing films exclusively on Blu-ray. HD-DVD has the backing of several major consumer electronics manufacturers but does have some ground to make up with the production companies. However, with the added experience of being in production longer and having consumers more familiar with the name, it’s very possible for them to pull ahead. The race to be the top home entertainment format will continue on and the consumer will simply need to wait to see which one wins. In the meantime, players are available for both formats and some manufacturers have players that satisfy both formats available.

The compact disc has been around since 1978, developed by Phillips and Sony. The reason it was developed was to take over for the Laserdisc as the industry standard digital audio disc. Since its invention, we have seen many updates on the compact disc technology. The most recent being the CD-R and DVD discs. With the CD-R, you can now burn your own discs at home, and then modify those discs at a later date. DVD technology allows us to record video onto a disc, where we used to only be able to record audio and data. As time rolls by, and the disc industry advances, we are presented with new forms of these technologies. The two new contenders are blu-ray discs and HD-DVD, here’s a little information about each of these new disc types.

1. blu-ray

This type of disc, also known as blu-ray Disc, is the next generation of optical disc. It was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group of consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, including: Apple, HP, Mitsubishi, Phillips, Sony, and others. The Blu-Ray disc type was mainly developed for recording, rewriting, and playing back high-definition (HD) video. It’s also perfect for storing large amounts of data, exceeding previous DVD-R disc storage capabilities. It can hold more than 5 times the amount of information that a traditional DVD can hold, up to 25GB single layer, and up to 50GB dual layer. One of the main differences of the Blu-Ray disc is the type of laser that the disc is read with. Normal DVDs are read with a red laser, the Blu-Ray discs are read with a blue-violet laser. The main benefit of this change is the wave length of the laser types. The traditional red laser has a wider focus, so the blue-violet laser can be focused more precisely allowing more tightly packed data. This equals more data in less space on the disc, this results in the additional storage space available on the new Blu-Ray discs. These new discs are backwards compatible with regular DVDs, which they are expected to replace in the near future.

2. HD-DVD

HD-DVD discs, High Definition Versatile Discs or High Definition Digital Video Discs, are very similar to the Blu-Ray discs. This disc type is being developed by a group of consumer electronics/PC companies, headed by Toshiba. They also use a blue-violet laser to read the contents of the disc, which results in an increase in storage capacity compared to normal DVD discs. The HD-DVD can store 15GB single layer and 30GB double layer, making their storage capacity 10GB per layer smaller than the Blu-Ray. But Toshiba has announced a triple layer disc that can hold 45GB of information, and the HD DVD discs can hold both HD DVD and regular DVD information on one disc.

Right now these two disc types are battling it out to become the next generation of DVD disc technology, conjuring up images of the battle between Betamax and VHS in the 80’s. I guess we’re all wondering who’s going to come out on top? In my honest opinion, I believe that Blu-Ray will become the new standard. Both disc types offer HD capability and large data storage capacity, so it’s kind of hard to say which is better. The Blu-Ray, with its greater maximum storage capacity and the fact that it’s being backed by more of the large consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, I believe will win the battle. But it’s all still up in the air, so only time will tell.

And people still like to use discs for movies and storage. They are familiar with a 12cm disc and know how to use them. Besides people have learned to trust and rely on these discs. Bringing us to another major drawback of digital downloading. Downloading 100 GBs worth of movies is fine, but what happens if your hard drive crashes, you will have to re-download all your movies. Most people still like having their movies in a physical form on discs for convenient storage.

The simple fact is, while digital downloads and Blu-ray will compete for the same market, one does not have to exist without the other. Both can offer you an alternative to each other. However, Blu-ray is the option available right now and it is not going to be replaced with another format in the foreseeable future. So given all these factors, I believe the time is right for Blu-ray to succeed and keep succeeding in the future as the High Definition viewing system of choice.

HDMI is the latest connection type found on all new modern TV's, most modern Home Theatre amplifiers and many computer monitors. But why is it important to buy equipment with HDMI connections, and how much do you need to spend on HDMI cables?

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface, and was designed to be a backwards-compatible replacement for the DVI interface commonly found on computer monitors. The standard called for a single cable that could carry a high-definition video stream, up to eight channels of digital audio and a single Consumer Electronics Control Signal. Its primary purpose was to become the standard connection between all consumer AV devices and computer displays. Today, all new projectors and televisions will come with at least one HDMI connection and usually more to receive hi-definition video.

Perhaps the most significant part of the HDMI specification is the support for HDCP, High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection. HDCP-protected content such as blu-ray movies can only be decoded by licensed HDCP players, and any devices that connect to the player, must also be HDCP certified, or the player will only output a standard-definition signal. For this reason, when buying high-definition projectors, televisions or other devices, it's best to make sure they have HDMI connections and are HDCP certified.

Be careful when hooking up your home theatre system. It is not possible to have a HDMI connection to your amplifier, and then a component connection to your projector, as the HDCP protocol will prevent the player from sending a hi-def video signal due to the final connection not being via HDMI. It is possible, however, to connect your blu-ray player or cable box to your TV by HDMI and use a separate connection, such as a digital optical cable, to send audio to your amplifier.

HDMI carries both audio and video. This means only a single cable is required to connect a TV to your blu-ray player or cable box. If you use a separate Home Theatre amplifier, then the player and cable box can first be connected to the amplifier, which is then connected by another HDMI cable to your TV. In this setup, the amplifier uses the audio channels and passes the video channel on to the TV. If you use the approach, look for a high-quality Home Theatre amplifier, with several HDMI inputs for all your sources, which also support HDCP.

Finally, a few words on buying HDMI cables. The prices of HDMI cables can vary enormously, with certain branded cables costing 10x the price of the same length unbranded cable. In practice, HDMI cable quality has very little impact on the quality of the audio and video transmitted through it. Unlike previous home video cable standards, HDMI is an all-digital connection, so the signals are much more resistant to interference and noise. For short cable lengths, almost any HDMI cable will be fine. Longer lengths can be more susceptible to connection dropouts due to HDCP signal loss, so consider spending a little extra on these, but keep away from the most expensive brands as they offer very little extra benefit.

You’ve heard the story before. Technology pushes onward and a new media replaces an aging stalwart. In the 1980s, it was Betamax vs. VHS tape. Today, it is blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

The traditional DVD is on its way out. There’s little disagreement about that. The DVD player’s red laser is losing its appeal and the new blue laser of upstart competitors is gaining more attention. Alternatives boast considerably more storage space and flexibility—necessities as the HDTV era establishes itself and consumers’ tastes for products loaded with extras grows. The only question is who comes next. There are two primary contenders, blu-ray and HD DVD, but no clear winner.

HD DVD disks will hold 15 GB of data on a single layer, 30 GB with dual layering. Tests substantiate a 45 GB capacity with a theoretical limit of 60 GB. That 15/30/45/60 line looks good compared to today’s DVD. However, when one compares it to blu-ray capabilities at 25/50/100/200, it seems unthinkable that HD DVD could grab a market share advantage.

HD DVD, however, has a few advantages. First, it’s cheaper to make. Compared to Blu-ray, factory retooling is a breeze. Second, it’s probably sturdier. Bother options have thinner protective layers than the DVD, but one may be able to pierce the Blu-ray’s protective shield too easily. Third, HD DVD is closer to being ready for mass production and distribution.

Major players have lined up behind both options. Hopes for cooperative abandonment of the competing options for a standardized format have dissipated.
